We have two laptops in the office with two different dock stations, its a pain disconnecting the ethernet cable everytime one of us needs internet, would this work for connecting both laptops at the same time or would we need a switch?

if i run an ethernet cable from my router to a room with a female end, could i then use this adaptor to plug 2 devices into the cable eg a laptop (with usb ethernet adapter) and desktop or a tv and xbox1?

No you will need an Ethernet switch to use multiple devices simultaneously.

I currently run bt TV from an ethernet socket in living room. Sons are wanting a ps4 that I believe you need Internet connection to download games etc. Would this product allow me to run both ps4 and bt TV at the same time?

NO .. if you wish to create multiple Ethernet sockets from a single to be used simultaneously you need an Ethernet Switch. This one would be ideal.
