What can I do with this kit?
Boost a mono audio input to output to a speaker (not included). Amplify your audio input up to 32W with a supply voltage of 44V into an 8 ohm load. This kit works on a single channel, making it ideal for mono devices. This compact board, just 56 x 54mm, can fit in almost anywhere – even with a heatsink. With 15 parts this is a great kit for those looking to get more practise with soldering or audio enthusiasts.

What can I learn from this kit?
Use resistors, capacitors and a microchip to create a circuit to boost your audio input. Get experience with soldering these common components and see how they fit together into a circuit. The circuit takes a small signal and amplifies it without changing the pattern. The kit is built around the TDA2050V integrated circuit. IC chips create heat-in amplifiers requiring a heatsink (not included – recommended Order Code RN90X) to remove the heat from the circuit and prevent damage to the electronics. Your output from this circuit will depend on your input and the power supply used. This kit requires a soldering iron and solder, and may require wire cutters.

How easy is this kit to solder?
This is a great kit for novices or audio enthusiasts building their own sound systems. Once you’ve put the kit together you can make it even more convenient by adding an easy-to-connect-to jack, screwing inputs and outputs, or create an enclosure for the kit. Just make sure there is enough air circulation to allow for cooling. This kit requires a 10-44V power supply and the highest wattages are only achievable with a larger power supply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good sound from TDA2050 kit I get good hi-fi sound from a pair of these with 45V supply. Good value. Needs a bit of work to securely mount the PCB and heatsink. The input capacitor needs reversing (in typical use) ... but then the same mistake exists on the TDA2050 data sheet from which the circuit comes !!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This claims to be an educational kit, so I was surprised that there is no circuit diagram or spec details on gain or input sensitivity. There is no way to connect input/output/power except by direct wiring to the PCB. Pins, or better appropriate connectors would have been useful. The recommended heat sink is different from that shown in the photograph and cannot be mounted in the orientation shown as (1) the IC does not fit between the heat sink vanes, and (2) the vanes are obstructed by C3. It is not possible to screw the IC to the heat sink after fitting C3 as it obstructs access to the screw, therefore the IC and heat sink should be mounted on the PCB BEFORE fitting C3. There are 5 mounting holes on the PCB, but 3 of these cannot be used with metal spacers as this would short out either input, output, or power. The other two are obstructed by the heat sink! Overall a poor mechanical design with a number of practical issues. I await to see how it performs electrically.

I have a +/- 42v symmetrical power supply. Will this power this amp?

Can this be powered off a 12 volt car battery?

The device can be powered via 10-44V power supply, so could be powered from a car battery. However Maplin are unable to advise on any modification of units or circuit/project design advice.

What is the dimensions of the PCB, and what is the distance between the two mounting holes?
