What can I do with this kit?
Add warning lights to a model or add to a party atmosphere with this stroboscope. You can use the potentiometer to set the flashing rate between 1.5-20 Hz. The two white LEDs flash together – and you can use them to make people appear to be moving in slow motion or even see objects seem to run backwards. With just 16 parts, this is a great kit to get into electronics.

What can I learn from this kit?
Practise soldering and learn about electronics and circuits with this stroboscope kit – which uses resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs and a potentiometer (variable resistor). Learn how they are connected in a circuit and get practical experience in soldering them. The circuit uses a 555 timer chip to alternate the LEDs on and off and a variable resistor to vary the frequency. This kit requires a soldering iron and solder and may require wire cutters.

How easy is this kit to solder?
This is a great kit for beginners and those looking to practise their soldering. Once you’ve created the stroboscope you can add an enclosure (not included) to protect your circuit – taking care not to block the LEDs, switch and potentiometer. The kit comes with a 9V battery box and requires a 9V (PP3) battery (Order Code L46AL).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really bright adjustable strobe Neat little strobe light kit. Easy to put together if you have any experience of soldering. Make sure the right resistor is in the right place. Make sure the LEDs are the right way round, they can be mounted at a right angle with a small pair of pliers. Excellent advice to touch a steel tap while inserting the IC chip, not many people have antistatic mats or shoe straps at home. The light flashes like an emergency beacon on its slowest setting and rapidly on the fastest. I think the most disorientating setting is just slower than this. Could easily be put in a small housing to make it waterproof, maybe with the addition of a waterproof switch.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This kit is so dim, its almost unusable! As soon as you turn the pot, to change the frequency, the lights dim. They do flash to what ever the rate is set as, but very disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stroboscope Kit I bought one of these kits a while back and it works absolutely fine (you have to make sure components are placed the correct way around etc). I use a 9v pp9 Ni-MH rechargable battery. The thing is pretty robust to be honest as I carried it about in my jacket pocket with other things in the pocket for months and surprisingly none of the components broke off etc. I'd say this strobe kit is a good introduction to the world of 555 timer circuits, and if you search the web you'll find many 555 circuit tutorials and projects. I'm only beginner level in electronics and found this kit very simple, but I made sure I paid attention to which resistor goes where and which direction components go. You could easily solder wires onto the led legs to run a piezo buzzer or speaker, or some metal electrodes for a makeshift tens machine (your imaginations the limit).

One of the LEDs has blown. What is the item code to replace it, or what are the specs of the LED, thanks.

These are 4.2V forward voltage @ 20ma, we do not sell a suitable LED to replace these, but you could use a standard 3.6v one by replacing R3 33 ohm resistor with a 90 ohm resistor.
