Why would I use this wireless router?
The NETGEAR D7000 Nighthawk dual band router gives your wireless network a boost by offering up to 1.9Gbps data transfer speed using 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Enjoy lag-free wireless gaming and seamless, buffer-free streaming of high definition media with the built-in advanced QoS. This prioritises your games and streaming when multiple devices are running network tasks like emails or web browsing. Three high powered amplifiers, with external antennas and Beamforming+ technology, offer a focused WiFi signal to your portable devices. This increases the reliability and range of the signal. Secure WPS creates WiFi connections at the push of a button.

How can I use this router to connect and share my media?
The Nighthawk D7000 features an integrated Gigabit network switch with four LAN ports, giving your network a high speed. It also grants any devices lacking wireless capabilities an uninterrupted point of connection that’s perfect for HD media streaming.
A single DSL port lets you plug this router directly into your phone line for a connection to your ISP. Alternatively, a single Gigabit WAN port provides compatibility with cable internet connections – allowing this router to be connected directly to an existing cable modem.

Two USB 3.0 ports allow you to attach USB printers or external hard drives to your router, enabling access to the devices through your local network – or access them remotely via the routers’ built-in VPN or ReadySHARE USB software. This router is DLNA certified, so you can find and play media from an attached hard disk on DLNA-compliant devices such as televisions, game consoles or media players.

How secure is this NETGEAR router?
Whether it’s protecting your network from intrusion or limiting web access for children or guests, the D7000 Nighthawk from NETGEAR provides you with the control you’ll need to keep your network secure. Restrict access to web pages and monitor usage times with the routers’ built-in parental controls, and apply a separate WiFi network for guest access – which will keep your main network private and ensure all of your files and passwords are kept secure and hidden.

What is NETGEAR genie?
NETGEAR genie is a free dashboard application that allows you to monitor, control and fix basic router issues from a portable device such as a smartphone or tablet. View a map of your network to see what devices are connected, and remotely block any unwanted connections. You can also use your portable device as a remote control for your DLNA media devices, and access any media stored on external devices through the routers’ USB 3.0 ports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product The best thing I can say about this product is that after a couple of months of using it I have forgotten all about it. Now we have no issue with Internet access anywhere in the house so we don't ever think about it. It was easy to install once we had the necessary information from the service provider. You tend to blame internet access on your service provider. In reality, there is only one provider, BT. All the others do is provide their own router. Most of them are produced as cheaply as possible so the answer is not to change service provider but to buy a quality router of your own and you will get the best possible performance from BT's broadband. And so it has proved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Round Router I bought this router a couple of days ago and have not been disappointed. I've been looking for a while for a replacement for my BT home Hub 5 as I have a Network Attached Storage server and so needed something that could serve the large amount of traffic flowing through the LAN and WAN. This router has an excellent range of features that put it miles ahead of the Home Hub 5. The QoS feature is something that is particularly useful as it ensures packets are prioritised without impacting the quality of the connection for other users. Whilst there is no speed improvement over the BT Hub in terms of WAN connection speed the wi-fi connection (5Ghz) is consistently higher at around 860Mbps. The network feels generally more stable which is reassuring and gives me confidence that the router will perform consistently and serve the needs of our house. The only negative I can think of for this router is the web interface can sometimes be a bit slow to load, however this is probably down to the network having to discover all the devices connected to it. Also the web GUI layout could be improved but this is just a minor issue as all of the features and functionality is there. So to anyone thinking of buying this router I would say that it will not disappoint you regardless of if you are a basic user or a power user wanting a great feature set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blows BTHUB Out The Window I bought this last week after suffering connection drops daily from the new all dancing BT-HUB, So my search began for something to replace that unwanted guest in my home, I found the Netgear D7000 AC 1900 and I collected it the same day from my local store, There it was just looking at me with an handsome smile as if to say I know you've had problems but I promise to take care of you :-) I plugged my new friend in to my Mac s and gentle and smooth he begin to light up as if to show me the future was bright and I could say goodbye to that old not so smart Bt Smart-Hub. I was set up with 4-5 minutes and I have had much better wi-fi and my new friend hasn't left me once with connection drops but remains solid with his comforting arms around my network. Anyone considering dumping there ex (BT Smart-Hub) then consider the all new Netgear it just works and doesn't come with baggage Happy of Peterborough :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of kit As a retired IT consultant, I have set up many Routers and Modems but this one was a surprise. It was delivered promptly by Maplin and I unpacked it, plugged it in and armed with all the information I needed to set it up, logged into the unit. and downloaded the setup "Genie". Then was given the choice of letting the "Genie" set it up or doing it myself. From past experience with similar products from other manufactures, I doubted that the "Genie" would do it on it's own without a lot of input from me, but decided to see how good the Genie was and selected it. First and only question it asked was the name of my ISP. This was followed by a message saying, "wait while setup completes" followed a few minutes later by "Completed". Checked that it was in fact working by opening my email program and downloading the waiting emails. Then plugged in my "Powerline" house network, held the WPS button down for a few seconds and the network was working seconds later. I haven't had to touch the router since, and the speed of video streaming to the TV has gone up by a factor of five. This unit is can only be desribed as "Brilliant". It's simply the best home router I've ever used.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from what a let down. I bought this as my hh5 died and my asus n66u was a router and not a modem. The nighthawk on the whole is a deacent piece of kit but is limited to certain things which lets it down and the GUI is a bit confusing and poorly laid out. If you are a console gamer or have consoles in your house avoid this like the plague as the QoS is limited to upload controle only and has now download. For pc gaming it is fine but not for me as I want total controle over my network in every aspect. BUT, and this is a huge BUT, anyone who knows about bufferbloat knows what a nightmare it is in gaming wether it is pc or console. The bufferbloat lag is disgustingly high and i mean unplayable gaming. The netgear forums are full of complaints about this issue and for the ammount of money this costs you would think netgear would get to grips with it. I took it back this morning and got the ASUS DSL-AC68U. Now that is a flying machine and has total network controlability and it's biggest and newest feature is adaptive QoS which rocks. my bufferbloat has vanished completely. If you go for the dsl66u instead of this nighthawk make sure you download the latest firmware to enable hassle free and isp setup that even my granny could do. Hope this was helpful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible returns policy Purchased a month ago to replace an old but very reliable router. Nighthawk very unreliable, kept losing internet and printer connections, would not print from iPad. After hours of calls and many emails it stopped working. A replacement was agreed. What they don't tell you is you have to pay to ship it back to them! Never had this with any other manufacturer - unacceptable in my view. Would never buy another Netgear product. Happily back working with old router.

How many laptops can I have on Internet at same time ?

Asked by: Sadie
Technically 253, however realistically with this router the amount you could use would be reduced by your internet speed more than this router.

Will the Netgear D7000 router work with TalkTalk fibre. I'm looking at replacing the standard TalkTalk Huawei router which isn't very good (no gigabit and poor WiFi). I've seen this router recommended and it's in stock at my nearest Maplin store (L1)

Asked by: crissydutch
Yes, I am pleased to advise this product will do exactly as you require, but set up and implementation of the unit would be down to yourself and talk talk.

Does this router allow remote teleworkers to connect to the local LAN via secure VPN tunnel. Without the need for a separate VPN provider account

Asked by: Milton
Since posting the question I researched Netgears' support pages and the answer is no. To use the VPN facility on this router it is necessary to have a account with a third party provider.
