Why use the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6?
Unleash performance Wi-Fi on your home network with the Nighthawk X6 cable modem. AC3200 speeds, spread across three independent wireless 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 5Ghz bands, run simultaneously and maintain a high speed connection across your wireless network devices when multiple devices are connected. Six high-powered amplifiers, with external antennas utilising Beamforming+ technology, create a focused Wi-Fi signal to keep your devices connected at greater distances and ensure a stable, high speed connection at all times.
QoS (Quality of Service) controls, coupled with a 1Ghz dual core processor and a further three offload processors, prioritise your wireless traffic by assigning individual devices a specific wireless band. This keeps your legacy 2.4Ghz devices from slowing down any high-speed 5Ghz devices – which is ideal for streaming media to multiple devices or playing games online.

Can I use this router for my wired connections?
The Nighthawk X6 cable router features a one Gigabit WAN connection to connect to your cable modem, and four Gigabit 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports that offer a high-speed network for wired devices such as smart televisions, desktop computers and games consoles.
A USB 2.0 port allows you to attach devices like a USB printer, which can be accessed across your network using the included readySHARE software. A USB 3.0 port enables you to attach high speed external storage devices, which can be accessed locally or remotely using secure VPN.

How secure is my network with this router?
Designed with security as a first priority, the Nighthawk X6 D8000 cable router is loaded with security features to protect your privacy and enable a safe browsing environment for all its users. Parental controls enable device and application filtering – blocking access to web pages or restricting times at which the internet can be accessed. Setting a guest Wi-Fi network for others to use keeps your important network resources hidden and passwords secure by creating a wireless account separate from your main network.
You can create Wi-Fi networks quickly and securely at the push of a button with the routers’ WPS functions. WPA/WPA2 offers a high level of wireless security for your network, stopping uninvited users from draining your wireless bandwidth.

What is NETGEAR genie?
NETGEAR genie is a free dashboard application that allows you to monitor, control and fix basic router issues from a portable device such as a smartphone or tablet. View a map of your network to see what devices are connected, and remotely block any unwanted connections. You can also use your portable device as a remote control for your DLNA media devices, and access any media stored on external devices through the routers’ USB 3.0 ports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solved my Wi-fi drop out problems Bought this Netgear R8000 because our family of 6 had swamped the BT infinity hub-6 Wi-fi & it kept crashing Easy to set up - switched off Wi-fi on the hub-6 and connected it to the R8000 by Ethernet cable. Hub-6 acts as the modem bringing broadband into the house and R8000 distributes it via wifi. Solved all the connectivity/Home hub reset problems for things like Sky Q & family has stopped moaning about rubbish broadband :-) Good thing is there are three channels the Wi-fi can run on and the unit load balances so it copes with online gaming without disrupting everyone else. Expensive But how much a month are you paying for your broadband and getting a rubbish service because your BT smart hub isn’t up to the job? Definitely worth the investment

Will this device be a straight forward swap for the latest virgin broadband router? I have no modem but i think it is built into the router.

Asked by: Paul
Unfortunately, how difficult it is will depend on experience, If you are not confident with networks set up's I would advise to do some research the item possibly watch some video's on the internet of people setting the item up and see what you think in terms of how difficult it looks.

Netgear nighthawk x6 will this connect to the internet by its self or do I need a modem. Just watched YouTube and it said to connect it to your modem ?

Asked by: SpooneyGreen
This is a cable router so will only work with cable internet connections. you would need a seperate modem to use this. if you have an ADSL internet connection (one that comes by phone line) you would need a router with an RJ11 port like the one below

This would be the modem supplied by your service provider when installing your cable connection. Newer installations may have a combined cable modem and router, in which case you would need to switch the router to modem only mode before attaching this new router to your network.

You wouldn't necessarily need to get rid of the home hub. In the router settings it may be possible to switch it to modem only mode, in effect disabling the WiFi transmitters, and use this as the modem to connect to the Nighthawk.

Does this manufacturer make a combined cable modem and tri-band router in a similar design?

Asked by: big shugs
That would be a question to the Manufacturer themselves.

Would this be a suitable replacement for a BT Homehub 5, fiber broadband. Wired broadband speed is fantastic, but WiFi is shocking! Last Ookla speed test showed just 5Mpbs wireless Up & Download speed. Lots of WiFi enabled equipment in the house.

Asked by: SteveK
This would be added onto the Home hub as an access point.
