Why should I buy this dash cam?
The NextBase 302G Deluxe is an excellent dash cam for recording events on the road in 1080p full HD, helping to reduce insurance quotes and assisting with making a claim. It features built-in infrared LED’s to give you high quality recordings when driving at night. You can watch your recordings back on the 2.7 built-in screen to review any events that have happened. The built-in G-sensor will allow the dash cam to record any impacts or sudden course changes so that the event is protected on the memory card. The built-in optical sensor will allow the dash cam to record events that occur even when the vehicle is empty. Showing where events have taken place, the GPS recorder allows the dash cam to record your vehicle’s exact position and route taken. While recording, the screen blacks out to prevent the dash cam from becoming a distraction to the driver. The dash cam also records the date and time directly onto all recordings, preventing any disputes.

How do I use this dash cam?
This dash cam uses a class 10 SD card, between 2GB and 32GB (not included), to record any event. A 32GB memory card will give you approximately eight and a half hours recording time. When the memory card becomes full, an auto-loop function will allow the dash cam to begin recording over existing video files in chronological order. Once the memory card is installed, the dash cam can be suction mounted directly onto the windscreen and is powered by a built-in battery or the in-car power supply. The dash cam will then automatically turn on and start recording when the engine is started.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good features for price Got this just before Xmas to use on journeys over this period, I couldnt stretch to the Which? Magazine winning 402G so went for this model, and I must say for the cost its great value. Picture quality night and day is really good and GPS is all functional - computer software is easy to use and has loads of detail like G's, speed, location (on Google maps) and direction. A very good buy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Unit, works well I bought one of these last week, and fitted it at the weekend, so have only had a few days experience using it so far. Seems a good quality unit, and takes good footage. Easy enough to install – worth watching a few vids on youtube to get some advice about how to get the cable tucked away neatly etc. I used a plastic trim tool to poke the cable in between the headliner and the windscreen, and then removed the plastic trim over the A pillar and tucked the cable behind that, and round the end of the dash and under the passenger floor mat. The cable supplied is easily long enough (probably 4m or so?) to reach the centre console. My car has a 12v socket in the boot, and so I bought an extension cable for £8 on line, and ran it through to the boot out of the way (NB Maplin only sells extension cables of this type with a curly lead, which is no good for hiding it away). Instruction manual (on CD) is ok, and I was able to complete the set up and do what I needed to with a few quick references to the guide. When setting the time/date, the manual gets some of the buttons to press the wrong way round, so mind this!! The viewing software supplied, with map, is a bit tired looking (reminds me of obsolete versions of Windows), but easy enough to use, and the GPS/route recorder works well. You can also view the video in other media players if you want to. A few negative points to be aware of: If you set the resolution to the max of 1080, the frame rate seems to reduce from a max of 30fps to 15fps – this is what the video playback seems to indicate anyway, although the footage still looks ok to me. This is a bit disappointing if the case – I had expected to be able to record at 1080 with 30fps. The camera angle of 120d is not as wide as you might expect – just enough to cover the full width of the bonnet of a large car. Due to there being quite a lot of white lettering on the outside of the camera I felt it is quite visible from outside the vehicle, which is not ideal given the theft risk – I put some black tape over most of the writing which helps a lot. The holder is very good, with a powerful suction cup which locks into place and holds the camera very firmly. Beware however, it is also a right pain to remove the camera from the holder – very stiff, so be very careful, and you also end up pressing buttons by accident. The SD card (not supplied) needs a firm press into place. NB Note for the designers – if you put the SD card slot at the bottom of the device, this could be removed easily without taking the camera off the windscreen. Currently you have the SD card slot at the top, meaning you have to remove the camera to take the card out. There is also the option to change the refresh rate from 50Hz to 60Hz, but I have no idea what difference this makes to anything, or if this affects any of the other settings, and there is no information about this to be found! It is a good feeling though, knowing that you have access to HD video evidence if you are involved in an accident or incident, or want to report someone else’s illegal driving. It also makes you focus on your own driving given your actions (and speed!) is being recorded! Also, switch the mic off unless you want your own conversations recorded. I’d also recommend setting the screensaver to 10 seconds – this means the screen will run for 10 seconds when you switch the ignition on, which is long enough for a quick a check that the camera is aligned and recording ok, and it then it shuts the screen off so it doesn’t irritate passengers whilst you are driving (the screen shouldn’t be visible to the driver anyway as it should be tucked away behind your rear view mirror).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disapointment Spend £100 to get a decent camera rather than the £20 and £30 cheap ones expecting good quality. Picture quality poor and even when the car in front is close enough for me to read the number plate you can hardly see the car on on the monitor let alone the number plate. (yes I have set it to 1080 ) It cannot find the GPS signal for about 10 minutes and longer when you are on the move. So 15 minutes into your journey before it can display position and speed. Evidential value of any footage taken in that time vastly reduced. Camera has to be removed to access the sd card.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Dash Cam Bought in May 2014, good camera, easy to use, only one problem is that the battery has failed, a common problem with ths manufacturer. Google before you buy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Camera, poor GPS The camera is working well, and the user interface is easy to use. The only problem is that the GPS does not work with heated front windscreens. I moved the sensor all over the window, and even tried to rig up an extension lead to place it elsewhere in the car, all to no avail.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Noisy and no GPS, I may have got a faulty unit..... After buying a 202 for the wife, it seemed logical to buy this for myself, but I regret it. The recording in 1080 was in 4:3 mode, but shows as 1080P in the software. There is buzzy interference when the car is moving, so has a manufacturing fault. The GPS never worked although it was mounted low or high on the windscreen, so was useless. It seems as though I should have bought another 202 or a different brand. The rest of the review refers to the 202 and 302. One con is that there is no emergency save button which is available on other units, useful for road rage or other specific incidents not picked up if the G meter is turned off, which is a requirement in Reading with its love of sleeping policemen! DO NOT USE THE USB FOR DATA TRANSFER AS A BLOCK DEVICE, IT IS SO SLOW! 1Mb per second. Take out the SD card (which needs a pencil, spike or long fingernails to get it in and out) and connect it directly to a card reader for a 16Mb per second transfer rate or better.

My dash cam said the SD card was full and the only way I could carry on recording was format the SD card is this right.

Asked by: tazman
If loop recording has been disabled then you would need to format the memory card in order to continue recording. Loop mode allows the recorder to save the video in small chunks, and once the memory card is full, delete the oldest recording to make space to store new recordings.

How does the 8.5 hours recording time work? Does it take 8.5 hours to fill up the SD or only 8.5 hours max per video

Asked by: daunis22
8.5 hours is the max size that can fit on the SD card.
