What is an RCD Safety Adapter?
An RCD (residual current device) Safety Adapter is a plug which sits between your equipment and your mains socket. It is designed to quickly cut power if there is a fault or a short in the device you are using, which reduces the risk of electrocution. RCDs can also provide some protection against electrical fires. They provide a level of personal protection that standard fuses and circuit breakers can’t.

There are two types of RCD – active (non-latching) and passive (latching). Non-latching RCDs switch off if the power to them is turned off, and latching RCDs remember what state they were in prior to the power being switched off.

What does this non-latching RCD safety adapter do?
This RCD constantly monitors the current flowing through the circuit that it is connected to. If it detects electricity flowing somewhere it shouldn’t be, the RCD will switch the circuit off very quickly. This will significantly reduce the risk of shock – for instance when for example, when somebody accidentally touches a live part.

The RCD will switch off when power to it is switched off. Each time the appliance is powered off the RCD will trip, and will need to be reset by going to the socket.
