What are some of the things I can do with this kit?
Control your lights through the dedicated app or using your voice whilst away from home, with this Philips Hue kit. The starter kit comes supplied with three Philips Hue white and colour ambience LED light bulbs (with GU10 fittings) and the Philips Hue Bridge 2.0. By communicating via Wi-Fi to the central Hue Bridge 2.0 at a touch of a button, each light bulb can be manipulated to turn off or on, have it’s brightness adjusted and emit any of the 16 million colours on offer.
What app can I use to control this?
The Philips Hue app can be used to control the whole Philips Hue eco system, and is available for Android 2.3 or higher and Apple iOS7 or higher smart devices. It gives you the ability to turn your light off or on and adjust the brightness remotely as well as plenty of other features. The vast range of colours let you illuminate your room to match your mood and change the ambience. Once you have made your favourite light setting, you can save them and recall them whenever you want, so you can change your mood, behaviour or alertness at the tap of a finger.
Functional with IFTTT (If This Then That), you can set certain events from apps, websites and devices to cause the Philips Hue light bulbs to change colour. An example would be to make your lights flash every time your favourite football team scores a goal.
What changes are there in this kit compared to previous versions?
The supplied Hue Bridge 2.0 gives you the ability to manipulate your lights with your voice, instead of using the app. In essence, what this means is that you can ask Siri (only for iOS 9 or later devices) to change all your lights to a certain colour, turn your light on or off, recreate a previously saved scene and more. If you have an Apple TV you can also control your lights with your voice outside. Other HomeKit compatible devices can communicate with the Philips Hue, giving you an integrated and all-in-one system.
Integration with other smart devices – Nest
Philips Hue products can work in tandem with any Nest products you own. If your Nest protect detects a possible hazard it can tell your Philips Hue lights to flash yellow alongside its audible warning. Alternatively, in the case of fire, your lights will flash red and then remain in a dimmed red state, providing you with visual guidance in smoky environments.
What can I expect from the included light bulbs?
Using LED technology in the light bulbs means they can be operated for up to 25,000 hours at an A grade energy efficiency rating and gives off 250 lumens of light. This will help you to save energy with bulbs which last longer than a traditional incandescent one.
How straightforward is the installation?
Fitted with a GU10 fitting, all you need to do is replace your existing light bulb with the one included. Setup the Hue Bridge and install the app, then you’re ready to fill your home with vibrant colours to suit your taste. Previous settings on an old Hue Bridge can be transferred over to the new Hue Bridge 2.0, so you don’t need to replicate them again. One Hue Bridge can have up to 50 Hue lights and 10 accessories connected to it at one time and is compatible with any existing Hue products.
