Solargorilla rugged water resistant solar panel, designed by Powertraveller's understanding of customer's power requirements when they are "off-grid". Designed as a charging solution for the powergorilla - solargorilla is also a viable charging option for laptops under 40 watts and it can even charge your mobile phone, iPod, handheld games consoles and many more devices from the 5V USB output.

A rugged foldable design easy to carry in your rucksack with a supply of different power adapters/tips to charge a vast range of products - SLR Cameras, Hand-held Cameras/Action Cameras, iPads/Tablets, PDAs, iPhones/Smart Phones, Mobile Phone, iPods/MP3/MP4, PSP/Hand-held/Games Consoles, Sat-Navs/GPS, Head Torches.

Solargorilla works via two PV (photovoltaic) solar panels, which generate electric current when they are exposed to sunlight.

The solar panels are made of glass which greatly improves the performance of the solargorilla as well as making the aesthetics of the unit better. The green LED on the solargorilla indicates the strength of charge - the more UV intensity - the better it will work! The technically advanced solar panels ensure superb power and reliable performance, all housed in a tough outer casing.

Solargorilla is a charging option. It is primarily designed to be used in conjunction with the powergorilla and may not work with some laptops over 40 watts directly. It relies on the UV intensity of the sun. Therefore, at certain times of the year it may not be suitable for use in the Northern Hemisphere unless combined with the powergorilla. The solargorilla solar charger has been trialled successfully in the Southern Hemisphere by aid agencies, emergency services, the military and adventure travellers, where power is a crucial element of their communications strategy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for camping I have 2 of these. One charges our phones and mifi , the usb shower and some usb lamps straight from the sun using its built in usb connection port (one at a time) . The other I have connected to a 12 volt battery through the DC power port and into a charge controller. . On sunny days, these can belt out the power hence the charge controller. In our garden in june I was getting about 20 volts and this hasnt been the sunniest year . I think their own powerbank must have regulators to limit the voltage but we charge one of ours using a laptop car connector which is easily connected to the panel with the supplied cigarette lighter socket. We also charge up various power banks from the 12 volt battery or just through the usb connector and can then run a laptop or tablets. One panel on its own isnt really powerful enough to run our laptop directly in uk sunshine although I havent tried it with the stronger july sun as we find it easier to go via a power bank and free up the panel for other things . It comes with many connectors so that there are a multitude of things you could plug in. If you wanted to connect two panels together, you can get a y splitter cable from the makers website to do so. There are a few other specialized cables available from them too. The panel folds up and can fit in a back pack . You can hang it from trees etc or stand it on the ground. We found that one of those little folding, luggage type camping trolleys was ideal for standing it on ,secured by bungees. These panels will charge indoors behind glass and even in a closed tent but the energy received is much less. They handle a rainy day well . The power connection sockets are on the bottom for that reason I think.Obviously whatever you are charging needs to be protected from the rain. We found a strong plastic bag was good enough for that purpose with the panel outside and the thing to be charged, in the carefully folded bag.. I believe the first version of this panel did not have a drain protection diode incorporated but this newer version does. The old ones had a red charging light and this one has a green one. The old ones came in black boxes and these newer are in white boxes. If you buy these in the sale as we did you still get a sealed new unit, not a returned opened item.

Does this only charge things that are liked up to them when the panel is in the sun, rather than store the charge?  Can it hold any charge at all?

Asked by: pabr
The item holds no charge and will charge items connected via USB.

Is there exact same models without a display as the one in the picture appears to have a digital box on the front? My one does not have a display on the front to say the amount charged, I am thinking of exchanging it.

Can it be also used (and does it have leads) to charge a 12 volt battery?

Asked by: JamesIan
Unfortunately this would not be suitable as it doesn't have the correct cable connections to allow for regulated battery charging.
