What makes this multimeter different?
The PG017 is a highly specified digital multimeter for the serious amateur and electronics engineer. It is capable of reading AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current resistance, capacitance and frequency, and give an audible continuity reading.

How easy is this multimeter to use?
This multimeter is simple to use and read. Depending on the job at hand, you turn the dial to what you are wanting to test or measure and the screen will display the reading. The ‘data hold’ button allows you to continue displaying the reading even after removing the test probes.

Can I use different probes with this multimeter?
It is possible to use a multitude of probes with this multimeter, as long as they have a 4mm socket fitting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Device worked ideally in all of its modes and provides exactly what is required for my electronic competence working almost solely with DC equipment. The biggest nuisance is that, when the device 9V battery runs out you have to completely disassemble the device in order to get at it. After the battery was replaced the reassembly became a nightmare. Upon refitting at least one surface mount capacitor was dislodged and the device no longer works. Whether this is poor solder contact or a break due to something being out of place on refitting it should not require a full electronics suite of equipment to replace a battery...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The product seems good but I feel that the instructions need to be fuller as terms are used without indicating the symbol that is used for them on the meter itself. In places more detail of how to use the various features would be useful, especially those not found on many more basic multimeters. No doublt, for a professional user of all the features would present no problems. I chose this meter as many digital multimeters do not have AC current capabilities, unlike my old analogue one that has finally 'given up the ghost'.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I bought one of these about 20 years ago - the battery has been changed several times the 0.5A fuse more than once, but it still goes strong. My biggest criticism is that there is no auto-off feature, I have lost track of the number of times I have left it switched on by mistake and come back to a flat battery. PP3 are not the cheapest to replace either!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The item arrived on time, it has done all that I have asked it to do so far, and although it will probably be years before I try everything it is capable of I will not worry too much about the rest. A very reasonable cost to boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely reliable and solid piece of kit! Mine is 25 years old! I bought one of these multimeters as my second-ever multimeter when I was a teenager starting to get serious about electronics some 25 years ago - late 1980's. I still have the exact same meter, and it still works as well as it did then. I've done nothing for it except replace batteries and occasionally the fuses if I got careless. I was amazed to discover that the exact same meter is still available, and costs about the same I must have paid for it! Definitely worth every penny. If it lasts as long as mine, and there's no reaosn why it shouldn't, it'll be a bargain. This is a solid, basic meter that does everything you need for most jobs. By the time you need more, you'll be buying an oscilloscope anyway. That's a whole different kettle of fish!

How do you test a Diode with this multimeter? I've followed the instruction manual - i.e. connect the probes across the diode (in this case the diode is not part of a circuit), I always get the same reading whichever way the probes are connected.

My 20 year old one was connected across the mains input end of a non responsive cooker spark ignition unit set at 600v AC of which It was resting on which was earthed. I tried the ignition, the display went blank with a pop and is now dead. Why?

Asked by: Anygoes88
It could've been a surge of overvoltage reversing its way through from the H.T. of the ignition, evidently the meter not having this kind of protection which I assumed it would have at the price. The quick blow fuse didn't, hence zapping the delicate chips inside unless any of the components such as the transistors before them failed instead. I can't see its age being a factor though as electronics tend not to 'wear out'

How can I open the case to replace the battery?  (One end comes out when unscrewed, the display end doesn't) !

Asked by: John
I have just done it on ours in the office. Remove the two screws from the bottom - then open the unit from the bottom the top part is held on by two small clips that come out as you open from the bottom slide towards you slightly.
