What makes this iron different?
This soldering iron comes with almost everything you need to get started. The kit includes an assortment of heads so you can switch from one to another to suit the job you are doing. It also comes with some solder and a tip cleaning sponge to keep your tips nice and clean. All of this is contained in a heavy duty box to keep everything protected while it is being stored.

What difference does the wattage make?
The wattage of a soldering iron is one of the most important factors when deciding which one to buy. When the wattage is higher, it will deliver more power to the tip, allowing it to heat up quicker. As this is a 70W soldering iron, it heats up the tip in as little as 20 seconds allowing you to start soldering without having to wait.

What are the other tips used for?
The tips included with this kit are suitable for a range of jobs. The standard 1mm tip is what you would use for normal, component or wire soldering based jobs. The torch head attachment gives you a pin point precision flame for the more accurate jobs while the hot knife attachment gives you a tool for accurate cuts through plastic, Styrofoam and candles. Lastly, it comes with a hot air blower which is perfect for use with heat shrinkable sleeving, so you can cover your soldered connections for an extra bit of protection.

Do I need anything else for this soldering iron?
To get started, this soldering iron kit has almost everything you need. You will require Butane gas so you can actually use the soldering iron, of which you can get here – N59AN. If you require more tips, or different tips, these are available here – N88FA and N89FA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have been meaning to buy myself one of these for a while now and spent a good few nights reading reviews on different ones. I decided to go with this iron and very pleased I did. Nicely packaged, a glass bottom so you can see the fuel, and so simply to use - I must for any hobbyist or light engineer work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my second gas powered soldering iron, the first (over 10 years old) is still going strong, but I wanted to be able to solder and use the heat gun options consecutively and repeatedly, hence the need for two devices. Being able to see the fuel level is very useful, especially to confirm correct filling. I have not found any faults, and I am particularly impressed by how quickly the heat gun attachment heats to temperature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this is a very nice gas soldering iron that heats up in about 15-20 seconds so unlike electric irons you can do lots of small jobs much more economically as a standard can of lighter gas will fill it about 8 to 10 times, all three of the extra tips in this kit are also very good. overall a very impressive lightweight, use anywhere iron!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent all in one pack, ideal if you're on the go like my (I am a service engineer) and need a portable soldering solution. Good that you get a bit of solder (though would have liked more) and the three different tips too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I had one of these and was very pleased with it, but after only 12 months of occasional use it packed up and maplin don't sell any spare/repair parts for them which is a shame.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good iron, bad box A good light weight, light/medium use soldering iron. Works well, comfy, easy to refil and lasts a good while one a charge. Add to that the extra tip functionality allowing for a diverse range of jobs. Great value, and can deal with any job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This soldering kit is ideal for my DIY projects, a very handy tool to keep at my work bench ready for immediate use and a good price too. I find Maplins a very good place for many items for the 'gadget man'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very useful, well-made little kit, great for on a boat or caravan with no mains power. Hot knife excellent for rope (seals the ends) and hot air gun does heat-shrink. Have bought three kits now - two as well-received gifts.

I've purchased this today and have a problem already. When using the gas slows down as if it's running out even though glass vial is full. I give it a shake and it works like it should for a few mins then does the same again. Any ideas or is it faulty?
