Rated 1 out of 5 by from USB 3.0? More Like USB 2.0 i bought this for backup and fitted a Samsung 3TB SATAIII drive inside it. It seemed OK acting as a Time Machine backup location for my Mac Mini (late2009). Then I connected it to my new Mac Mini (late2012) Core i7 USB 3.0 device. with 630GB of data to back up via Time Machine I do not think the estimated 24 Hours completion time demonstrates anywhere near the claimed up to 5 Gbps transfer rate. A quick calculation revealed it to be near 0.03 Gbps. Somewhat short of the mark. I'm sure Maplin would have swapped it out if I had identified this problem soon, but it is now 6 months old.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't work with Windows 8.1 Works well with Windows 7 and Windows 8. Stops working with Windows 8.1, which makes it fairly useless for me. I can't find a website address or any way to upgrade the firmware. STeve.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sata limitations Hi I think people are confused with the marketing information on the box 6gb/s is stated interface speed not the disk reed write speed which is at best around 0.4-5gb/s with a solid state drive. I am abit confused why Pete is getting 30 MB/s.. I wonder if has anything to do with USB 3 cable, port or drivers... That speed indicates that he may not be using USB 3.0 interface. I've benchmarked ssd on esata vs 7200 rpm spindle disk on esata vs 7200 rpm spindle on USB 2.0 vs ssd on sata and finally ssd on USB 3. I was disappointed at the esata controller performance. I suspect it may be the type of PCI express controller that i bought from maplins, however, I havn't seen a major increase in performance when comparing ssd on esata vs 7200 rpm spindle on esata, major benefit is on random read and write operations. The fastest option is ssd with sata, the second best external option for me was the ssd with USB 3.0 which can achieve similar speed the ssd with sata, in my opinion the drawback is the CPU overhead which has intermittent increase in CPU usage. If I was going to buy a ssd for external I would buy a USB 3.0 enclosure and if i can get a sata interface then I'd go for that. Source for benchmarking was Attos utility.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product, but watch out for the USB Cable I bought this recently and initially the transfer speed was incredibly slow, and would consistently start and stop. After doing some research online I swapped the supplied USB 3.0 cable for another one I had and it now works perfectly. It's incredibly fast and looks great, just be careful with the supplied cable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. Best usb3 external case I've had. It's so fast that I can run some of my installed programs from it (VLC, Nero, Qt, etc.) Good build quality (heat conductive and dissipating aluminum) at a very affordable price.

What does "supports xp / vista / w7" actually mean? Does the inserted HDD have to be supported or is it the PC that is being used to read data? I want to read data off a vista HDD using a w10 machine, will it work?

Asked by: Skippy
This will work fine with Win 10.

I bought this yesterday to enable me to install the internal HD from my old W10 PC and extract the data to my new PC and thereafter use it a an external HDD. Fitted OK but an error message is asking for a disc in the F drive.
