About this product

Overview

Product overview

• Make a moving salt water powered 4x4 car
• Build a car complete with a visible engine block and sturdy pivoted 4x4 design and power it using just a few drops of salt water
• Learn about alternative fuels
• Have fun creating this kit out of 96 parts
• Suitable for ages 8+
• No batteries required as it creates its own power

What can I make with this kit?
Use the 96 parts to build a rugged 4x4 car with pivoted body and large sturdy wheels. Watch the engine move either in flat or ‘V’ shaped orientation and adjust the height of your vehicle to get over the terrain. Suitable for ages 8 and over with adult supervision. The kit (21-752) clicks together – no need for batteries, glue or soldering. However, a crosshead and slotted screwdriver diagonal cutters (recommended Order Code A20QW ) and small stick may be helpful.

What can I learn from this kit?
Have fun learning about alternative clean energy with this cool salt water powered car. Salt water fuel cells create power by using a chemical reaction between a magnesium strip and oxygen. The salt water is a catalyst for the reaction. Add salt and water in a 1:5 ratio for the most efficient mix, experiment and see how the salt level in the water effects the car. Place four or five drops of salt water on the fabric and watch the car go for up to 15 minutes. Spare fuel cells are available - Order Code N44DQ.

The materials used are environmentally friendly with no toxic substances or chemicals used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 9 year old daughter built most of this car, with some help, and it has been a blast. There is need for parental involvement, to remove burrs and to ensure pieces are firmly clamped together (more than most kids will be able to do). However, the instructions are pretty clear and the results are pretty fantastic. Seeing this 4x4 move around the house and garden powered by 5 small drops of salt water is amazing, and hopefully inspiring to kids, and parents everywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value kit This kit is beautifully designed and mechanically perfect. Quite a high level of skill required for assembly which takes 2 hours plus. No glue required. Worked first time. Can always replace fuel cell with a lithium coin cell when saltwater cell is used up. Great toy because the workings of the display engine is visible in flat 8 or V8 configuration.Ride height can be altered plus the articulated 4 wheel drive chassis climbs over obstacles.

What voltage _should_ the fuel cell produce? Mine produces 1.58 volts, but this is not enough to move the vehicle. Wiring up a couple of old AAs (2.52 volts) is enough to get the vehicle moving. How do I increase the output of the fuel cell?
