• Dynamic thermal throttling protection technology reduces overheating
• Manufacturer product code: MZ-V5P512BW

What is the M.2 SSD used for?
The M.2 design, also known as the next generation form factor (NGFF), is for internally mounted computer expansion cards but also for use in ultrabooks and tablets as internal memory. Some newer motherboards also come with up to four M.2 slots built into them, allowing you to plug straight in and making them easier to install.

How is this SSD different?
The Samsung 950 PRO SSD has unstoppable performance, power efficiency and endurance - making your heavy workload much more manageable without any extra effort. This V-NAND-based NVMe SSD supports PCI Express Gen 3 x4 lanes, providing higher bandwidth and lower latency - which processes much larger amounts of data than SATA SSDs. The M.2 form factor is perfect for professionals using high-end PCs. Delivering speeds of 2,500MB/s and 1,500MB/s respectively outperforming other SATA SSDs by over four and a half times in sequential read and two and a half times in sequential write.

What benefits does this SSD have?
The Samsung 950 PRO SSD has great power efficiency, saving power while maintaining peak performance. The 950 PRO is one and a half times more power efficient than SATA SSD power consumption (based on internal 10GB file power consumption), making your battery last longer while maintaining high performance levels. The 950 PRO also features dynamic thermal throttling protection technology, which controls the temperature of the device to reduce overheating and maintain a high level of sustained performance.

How will a V-NAND drive help me?
V-NAND technology is a step above other SSDs. Instead of making the cells smaller to squeeze more in, it stacks them on top of each other. Silicon nitride layers also aid in preventing corruption caused by cell to cell interference, providing up to twice the average life span of other SSDs.
V-NAND technology not only lasts longer, but it uses up to 45% less power and delivers writing speeds of up to two times faster.

What do I need to know about NVMe?
Traditional hard drives will use a protocol known as AHCI, which was originally designed and optimised for spinning discs. NVMe on the other hand is designed specifically with solid state drives in mind, allowing a substantial increase in both read and write performance.

If you are looking to use this drive as an operating system boot drive, you will need to ensure that your motherboard supports NVMe.

I have a Samsung ultrabook with 250 SSD. I am thinking of increasing that to 500Gb and saw the Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD. Is there a converter so that this SSD could fit a mSATA connector?

Asked by: itspjb
Unfortunately you would not be able to connect this to mSATA

I have a 2015 Macbook Pro 13 which comes with a 128 GB SSD. I gather replacement drives are not easily sourced due to limited manufacturers adopting this standard. Can you confirm / advice if this PCIe SSD is suitable to replace the existing OEM SSD PCIe

Asked by: Adie
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee compatibility with any specific model. This drive uses the M.2 connection, you would need to check with Apple whether this is compatible with the SSD slot in your model of MacBook.

Will this work with a MacBook Air (April 2016) ?

Asked by: Anonymous
If you intend to place this drive into a specific PC / Laptop or Mac / Macbook it is imperative that you check compatibility with your manufacturer beforehand. Unfortunately we do not have specifications for each and every device on the market. In order to use this drive you should ensure that you have a computer equipped with a M.2 PCIe 3.0 slot and that the computer is capable of using that slot as a boot device.
