• Connect your SATA HD to your IDE PC/DVR/PVR

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I knew this was a bit of a long-shot when I bought it. Tested on a couple of PCs. On that basis this is not worth wasting time or money on. While you still can, either buy a new PATA IDE drive (for non-PC use) or buy a PCI slot SATA adapter card (for PC use). I have dropped this device into my spares box rather than ask for a DSR/SoGA refund; I am a firm believer in caveat emptor and the device was not actually defective ... it does work under BIOS/DOS (but not under Windows 98SE, Windows XP SP3 or Acronis True Image). Manufactured and branded for Maplin by someone called Oyatech in Taiwan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Update Just to update my original review since these adapters are still on sale. The problems I had originally were caused by too long an IDE 'chain': I was trying to fit a SATA 2.5" drive in an old (but expensive) 5.25" Lian Li IDE mobile rack meant for 3.5" drives. The EP-8RDA3+ machine I am using the adapter on now hangs for several seconds (annoying) at the *Collecting DMI Pool Data* stage before OS boot. Windows 98SE and DOS detect 2 spurious 0 byte FAT drives in addition to the actual SATA drive connected to the adapter (in 98SE these can be removed with TweakUI). Windows XPSP3 seems fine (apart from the slow boot). So, useable but annoying. The adapter itself is very well made with good soldering & solid case construction and reliable JMicron JM20330 chipset. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful but when fitted won't squeeze into as many enclosures that I had in mind for it At its reduced price of below half its original one I think it was a good value purchase and better to grab one before they have all gone (discontinued item) hopefully a new similar item will now replace it

is this unit for 3.5" or 5" drives (for SATA and IDE) ?

It is for any drive that use a standard 40 pin IDE connection It is not suitable for 2.5" laptop type IDE drives as these use a 44 pin miniature connector
