Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty fast enough for archiving, and the USB3 hub works as it should. Bought this a couple of weeks ago (£209 from Maplin) and at that price it is cheaper than the bare drive alone if bought elsewhere. Not the fastest drive ever but I just streamed 260GB of data to it @ 109MB/sec which over USB3 is good, and plenty fast enough for the purpose. The real issue of course is longevity and reliability of the drive inside the box, and there is no way of knowing when (not 'if') it will fail, but Seagate offer a 2yr warranty. The large 8TB capacity is the most attractive attribute and for a cheap mass storage solution tough to beat - but like any HD don't rely on it as the _only_ copy of any valuable files you may have. The USB3 hub also works fine and you can daisy-chain other drives through it if needed. Seems odd that the case has USB3 sockets which are Black and not the usual Blue colour - they're still definitely USB3 though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE this drive!! I don't understand all the negative comments about this drive. It's early yet as I've only had it for a few days, but one reviewer said it was really noisy, mine is close to silent. Another reviewer stated it had really slow transfer speed. To my amazement I get 200mbs a second! It's supposed to max out at 160mbs. As for Seagate's' drives being unreliable, I have 5 that range from 6 to 1 year old. Never had an issue with any of them. I loved the first one I got as a birthday gift, I came back for another!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Massive amount of storage I bought this to replace a nearly 6 year old 3TB external drive which had been used daily for continuous backups. The Seagate comes with backup software which I am still experimenting with to get the best setup for me. It works well and transfers files at a high speed, typically approx. 100MB/sec for large files.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A work of art This Seagate 8Tb Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a thing of beauty. It is a work of art. If Leonardo da Vinci was around today he would have designed it AND painted a portrait of it. My desk is running out of clear space; I have TEN Seagate HDD's, capacities 1Tb, 2Tb & 4Tb in several piles. Every time I buy a new HDD I foolishly think I will never need one with a greater capacity; wrong, my storage requirements seem to expand to fill the available drives. There are two USB ports on the front which is a great idea as, even with a 7-port USB hub, I never seem to have a spare port when I need to use a USB thumb drive or a card reader. I am a gentleman of "a certain age" and, many years ago, was instructed to make back-ups of important data. Not one back-up but TWO of everything. One only forgets to do this once; one's first HDD failure with NO back-up should be the last time it happens. To ensure peace of mind I have purchased TWO of these 8Tb HDD's which will hopefully meet my needs for a year or two! If you have a lot of photos, music files and films make a back-up now! You know it makes sense. Get a Seagate 8Tb HDD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to install and get to work Bought this as a main history store for Windows 10 and it plugged in and started working almost immediately. Had to transfer files from old history store but that was done by Windows and the drive now sits quietly backing up my system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A lot of storage for your money You won't find an 8Tb drive at this price point. It does what it says on the tin, however, there are no bells or whistles. Desktop software is good, the mobile software, not so great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Proving very useful. Enough disc space to use to use both as back-up for full hard drive and additional storage for photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes backing up a breeze The 'one click' automatic backup is an absolute lifesaver as it saves me having to manually go into specific folders and choose what I want to back up and what I don't. And since receiving, I've backed it up several times without even thinking about it, which is exactly what I wanted from a backup system.

Desktop External Hard Drive

Hi ... Can this be added to a network so more than one user can access ?

Asked by: Dave
If you want to add a drive as a personal cloud try looking at the Lima or Lima ultra add on. They are now far better than the originals.

Can I use this to record from and play back to my TV?

Asked by: Borax
I'm afraid this is just for storage , The recording part would be down to the TV, if it can record to a USB storage device , then it would work, In regards to playback , IF the TV has that function then it will be fine.

Can you tell me which hard drive is used? . at this price I am looking at removing the hard drive to install in my pc

Asked by: Bevo
The manufacturer part ref is : Seagate® Backup Plus Hub Desktop Drive : STEL8000200 a data sheet for the drive range can be found here Typically these units do not specify an exact drive model number, this allows the manufacturer to change the specification of the drive being used if they need to. With devices of this nature the manufacturer would normally use 5400 rpm drives with lower access speeds as the data is throttled via the USB connectivity anyway.
