Overview

Product overview

• Charges your mobile phone, MP3, Mini Disc/cassette player, digital camera and more• Why pay to charge your mobile?.... use the sun's FREE solar energy• Great for hiking, camping, travel and charging your AA or AAA batteries• Ideal for use as a battery charger and emergency power source• Built-in battery compartment charges 4 x AA or 2 x AAA rechargeable batteries (sold separately)• Can also be charged via USB (USB to mini USB charging cable included)• Charger has USB output port and mini USB input port• Reverse polarity protection• Built-in battery tester to test both rechargeable and alkaline batteries

This handy portable device has two thin-film solar cells. Just open it up in the sun and wait until the charge indicator signals that the batteries have been fully charged. Once charged you can either take them out of the enclosure and use them in your portable device, or you can just connect your device and power it that way. Alternatively, you can connect the charger to any USB port to charge the batteries. Unfortunately this device is not compatible with iPods unless you have a conversion power cord (from universal power adapter to iPod adapter - not included). Other devices will also require the USB charging cable supplied with the device (not included). The charger also has the capacity to test batteries. Both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be tested. If you have tested non-rechargeable batteries, please remember to remove these prior to using the device as charging a non-rechargeable battery can cause the battery to leak, which can cause personal injury and also damage the charger.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought this item about three weeks ago to use in Spain. Very dissapointed with this product first after being in the sun charging the cover for the battery compartment became loose and would not fit tightly. Secondly after checking the battery state whilst in the sun the battery condition showed green but after being out of the sun for about 15 mins and checking again before connecting the item to be charged the battery state was shown as yellow! So in 15 mins it changeds from a charged state to a weak state without use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I had to return the unit I bought to get it replaced because only 1 of the 2 solar panels actually worked, the other was aulty and provided no charge current whatsoever. The replacement item appeared to work as intended when checked out but subsequently failed completely 2 weeks into a 4 week walking/camping trip so will be returned shortly for a full refund. It's a good idea in principle and when it was working it worked quite well but the quality and/or reliability is apparently so poor that they seem to be pretty useless if you need to depend on them. I also agree that the battery tester function is a bit of a nonsense because it doesn't know the type of battery being tested - different types of battery generally have a slightly different typical terminal voltage and different charge/discharge characteristics.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I cannot recommend this charger. It would not charge either of my mobile phones (sony ericsson k750 & samsung D600). It always reported that the installed batteries were weak, even though i was using brand new Maplin Ni-Mh 2500mah that had been fully charged in an AC mains charger before hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Charges 2AAA or 4AA batteries by mains USB or sunlight. Batteries in device will then charge your phone, iPod etc. We have found that in Spanish October sunlight the AA batteries charged fully in just over a day in the sun. Batteries fresh from a partial charge will often show full then appear quickly drop in many chargers, but that is as much due to the battery as the sensing mechanism in the charger. Charger is lightweight for travel and so is not bomb proof but still fairly tough. We have used it in the weak Swedish summer sun to very good effect. We particularly like being able to charge torch batteries, or use the batteries to charge other devices. I am sure that in the last 2 years solar panel technology has improved and better panels are available but apart from this the product could not be improved. I will buy another in preference to other types of solar charging when I need to.
