What is the Sphero?
The Sphero 2.0 is a durable robotic ball that is fast, water-proof, pet-proof and ready to take on any adventure. The app-enabled ball gives you amazing interactivity and play. Designed with both an accelerometer and gyroscope, this spherical ball of fun is great for all ages. The Sphero can reach speeds of up to 4.5mph, allowing you to zoom and roll at 2 metres per second. This smart toy is controlled through Bluetooth via a smart device and offers an amazing 30 metre range. With the included ramps you can make your own obstacle range and race track. The Sphero features internal LEDs which allow it to glow and produce millions of vibrant colours, allowing for both personalisation and added play experience. Thanks to the Sphero’s LiPo battery, a single charge delivers up to an hour of play, with the inductive charging base station making recharging easy.
The Sphero has a number of accessories that allow it to bring a whole new ball game. The nubby covers, provide the Sphero with amazing traction and protection from scruffs and scratches. Turn your Sphero into a complete off-road robot and drive across all sorts of terrain whether it’s concrete, gravel or water. Available in two unique colours; blue (A02QY) and yellow (A03QY)
How can I play with the Sphero?
The Sphero 2.0 is controlled from a central app available for free, that works with iOS 6.0, Android 4.0 and Windows 8.1 smart devices. The main Sphero app allows you to steer the ball via your smart device, by using a digital D-pad or tilt controls. It has been designed to be easy to learn and fun to play, making it great for all age groups. The Sphero will initially start at a reduced speed, allowing you to get to grips with the controls and manoeuvres. There are 20 levels of progress which are unlocked gradually as you play with the Sphero - each with either speed increases, boost times, new colour options or an improved core reactor. Core reactor upgrades will increase how quickly you earn cores, which you can spend on new trick upgrades. Level up your individual Sphero and master your skills. While driving or playing the Sphero apps, you can even earn points that allow you to preview the next levels upgrades before you unlock them.
There are over 30 minigames that allow you to discover new ways to play. These range across driving, programing, arcade, augmented reality, table top, multiplayer and more. These apps offer many different play styles or ways to interact with your Sphero, offering plenty of extra value and replayability. Use the Sphero as a game controller in the palm of your hand, place virtual 3D characters to spawn on the ground and interact with the Sphero, or even play a game of hot potato with friends. The Sphero offers a great selection of new and reinvented activities or experiences for all ages.
How can I learn with the Sphero?
The Sphero is programmable and is an excellent tool to engage, practice or learn robotics and programing. The MacroLab app allows you to practice visual programming, unleashing the Sphero’s inner robot. It includes simple commands and functions allowing the Sphero to drive autonomously or follow unique patterns and combinations. The OrbBasic app offers advanced text-based programming, allowing you to execute basic programs and explore the inner workings of the Sphero. Both of these apps are covered in workshops offered by the SPRK education program and can be accessed from Sphero’s site, in plug and play lessons.
The Sphero has been designed for fun and exploration, offering developers an open API and mobile SDK, which offer support for iOS, Android, Unity, Windows 8.1 and augmented reality. There is a large community with projects including linking the Sphero to drones, leap motion and even Xbox controllers. The Sphero uses firmware, which keeps the ball up-to-date via the app, allowing improvements to be rolled out.
