What is a UPS?
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides emergency power and surge protection if your mains supply fails. At the moment when you lose mains power, any connected devices will be supplied with power stored in the UPS internal batteries. When power is restored the UPS is recharged automatically – a full recharge of this UPS takes approximately eight hours and provides up to 30mins* of emergency power, with a maximum 1200W/2000VA output. This allows you to save any data and shut down any connected electrical equipment safely, preventing any damage or corruption to your system hardware that a sudden loss of power can cause.

*Please note: The maximum runtime of a UPS is dependent of the load being drawn at any one time.

What connections are available on this UPS?
The Sweex PP230 provides you with an IEC C14 connection for input power, as well as six IEC C13 connections for output power. a single RJ45 passthrough connection is available to provide surge protection for your data lines. A single USB-B connection allows you to connect the UPS to a desktop or laptop computer to allow you to monitor and manage the UPS using the included ViewPower software.

What does the ViewPower software tool do?
ViewPower is a UPS management and monitoring tool that allows you to configure a single or multiple UPS directly from a desktop computer via USB or across a networked environment (either LAN or internet). The tool can provide analysis, statistics and event data of the UPS and its operation as well as allowing you to set any connected computers to automatically shut down upon power loss. Control of alarms and UPS battery tests can also be configured using ViewPower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Having had this unit for 3 weeks, it is performing well. There is a newer version of the Viewpower software that came bundled with the UPS available on-line, which installed, discovered the UPS without any problems and provides some excellent performance monitoring and management settings e.g. scheduled tests, remote alerts of mains power failures, etc. along with cleanly shutting down the computer when the battery is running low. This was a replacement for a different (industry recognised make) of UPS, and provides far more functionality at a much lower price. My only niggle would be that it is supplied with a non-UK (3-pin) power lead.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the Tin. The Only thing i really hate is that the 60mm fan is really bad and runs 24/7.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Be Carfull! I have used this unit for 12 months and just had a warranty replacement. Good for Maplin. However my local mains voltage is 252v ac (WELWY HERTS) and the unit does not like that! it is perpetually running the fan and dropping the output to anything between 215v and 209v (a 20% drop). In my case the fan running all the time is a nuisance but you might not be worried about it. I don't know how this affects my bill? No issues with build or reliability. I just think it is outside the perimeters for my area.

Typically these units have a bank of sealed lead acid batteries inside them, these can be replaced once they reach end of life.

I am looking for a back up to serve my garage roller door motor in the event of a power cut. It's a double width door, so quite heavy and the motor is rated at 1500VA. Would the Sweex 2000VA UPS be suitable for the job?

Asked by: Peter
On this occasion Maplin do not stock a product that exactly meets your requirements, or indeed anything close enough to offer you as an alternative.
