If you’re looking for a NAS drive for your business that can effectively manage, protect and share data then look no further than this Synology DiskStation DS414. Four tool-less hard drive trays let you easily install up to 4TB* in each of the bays, equating to a potential combined storage space of 16TB. The dual core 1.33GHz processor and 1GB of RAM means it is great at multi-tasking and has the ability to handle simultaneous users. The two Ethernet ports provide failover support and link aggregation, which when used with these hardware capabilities help to deliver over 207.07MB/s read and 135.63MB/s write speeds under RAID 5.
The Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is the web-based OS that comes with every Synology NAS. The built-in package centre lets you download and install the packages/apps that fit your unique needs. Whether you want to share files on the cloud, share pictures on an online album, have downloads be automatically started for you or set up a VPN environment, these can all be done with a few clicks. Synology DSM helps you maximise productivity and keep you in complete control of your personal cloud, with minimal fuss.
Can I backup to the NAS and how secure is the backup?
The Synology DS414 lets you use it as a centralised backup target for your computers. Windows users can use the Cloud Station application available within the package centre. Mac OS X users can use their native Apple Time Machine program to back up to the NAS drive. Another package you can install is time backup. Similar to Time Machine, this allows you to save data as multiple versions. IT administrators can then keep a log of these versions and roll-back to previous versions when required.
Losing any files, whether they’re backups or important files, can be frustrating and there are a number of ways you can avoid that. You can set up RAID configurations with RAID 1, 5, 6 and 10 available. You can also use the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), which is an automated RAID system that maximises the use of your hard drive while providing you redundancy.
Another way to secure your files is to backup to external sources. This gives you a safe off-site or portable backup, which would protect your data even if there is a disaster where this NAS is located. You can back up to a connected external USB drive, to another Synology NAS (or rsync compatible server) or to a cloud service, such as Amazon S3 and Glacier cloud services.
How can I access files stored on the NAS?
You can access the files through the encrypted FTP server and through the Synology File Station (a web-based file explorer). To make sure files shared over the Internet are protected HTTPS, firewall and IP auto-block support are all implemented into this NAS drive. If you’re on the move you can access your files remotely through the DS file app, which is available for portable iOS, Android and Windows devices. Other apps, such as DS audio, DS photo, DS download, DS video and DS cloud can be used as well.
There are a range of different packages you can use to match this NAS to your needs. The VPN server package turns your NAS drive into a VPN server, so you can connect to your private network remotely. RADIUS server can be installed to oversee wireless access authentication through the RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-in User Service) networking protocol to further strengthen your network.
Can I play my media files stored on the NAS to other devices?
As a certified DLNA media server, once connected to a wireless router, you can stream music, pictures and videos to DLNA-compliant devices without the need for pre-configuration. This gives you the ability to enjoy your media library on the big screen or with better speakers. Through DS video you can even stream your video to a TV through Apple TV, using AirPlay.
