What is a Slinky?
The Slinky was invented in 1945 by Richard James. The naval engineer accidently knocked over a spring he was working with and watched it walk down the books and shelves. Using this as his inspiration, he created the Slinky - which soon became a toy enjoyed through the ages.

How does it keep going down stairs?
The initial energy is transferred along the length of the Slinky as it tips over the edge - which allows it keep the motion going over the next step. The design of the Slinky also allows it to perfectly replicate sound waves and show the effects of echoing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, this is the original slinky with the perfect diameter for walking down the stairs with. After finding everywhere, I could only find it at Maplin. Having real fun with it!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not walk down standard stairs Based on a previous review I purchased, but this is tiny and does not walk down stairs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HAM RADIO OLDIE REVIVED Known amongst my radio-ham friends as "The Maplin Special"; two Slinkys, fed by open-ladder feeder, make a very effective dipole aerial, for both receiving and transmitting (via a tuner). It's simple, cheap, and it works!
