What can I expect from this router?
The TD-W8980 from TP-link is an extremely flexible router, joining an ADSL2+ router, cable modem, media server and dual-band wireless access point in one device. This makes the router a good choice or small to medium sized homes or offices.

What wireless capabilities does this router offer?
Simultaneous 2.4GHz 300Mbps and 5GHz 300Mbps supply your wireless network with more bandwidth, allowing supported devices to run at higher frequencies. This will provide more latency for your network by optimising tasks. Web browsing and e-mail can be handled by the 2.4GHz band whilst online gaming and HD media streaming can be run on the 5GHz, all at the same time. A total of five antennas will ensure that your wireless signal stays strong throughout your home.

What wired connections are provided?
Supplying you with both ADSL and WAN connections allows you to either connect directly to your phone line or extend from an existing router or modem. 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet ports provide fast reliable connections for all of your wired devices and stream media and transfer files across your network faster. Twin USB 2.0 ports provide connections for external hard drives or printers allowing these devices to be used across your network.

What network management does this router offer?
A web based configuration utility allows you to manage your network without the need for extra software, whilst diagnostic utilities ensure that your network is running optimally at all times. Parental controls allow you to restrict access to your network or inhibit web pages by blocking URLs, giving you piece of mind that your network is safe and secure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great solution to replace a duff Sky router My Sky broadband router packed up and I was facing a bill of Ј80 for them to replace it. Even when it was functioning, I had problems with poor signal strength upstairs and regular connection dropouts. I was also forever changing wi-fi channels to avoid interference from all of my neighbour's wi-fi. So I decided to upgrade and buy a decent router of my own. This router is powerful, has two simultaneously accessible frequency channels, 2.4 and 5 Gigahertz, and I connect a portable drive to it's USB port giving me a central network drive. No more drop outs upstairs, and never lost wi-fi connection. Using Sky wireless link to Sky box, wireless printer, 3 ipads and 2 laptops - no issues at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Setup Bought this to replace my terrible EE Brightbox modem as the wireless kept cutting out. So far it has worked flawlessly no problems with wireless dropping out. Playing games online with friends on PS4 and not had any problems at all. Really like that I have what seems like two wireless networks, one for 2.4ghz and one for 5ghz. There does seem to be a new firmware but as mine is working fine I will leave it as it is for now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent kit! Brought to replace an older Billion Router which had worked flawlessly until the internal wifi card gave up in it. This is a similar style, quite large box with 3 long external aerials. These aerials were longer than I expected and longer than the ones on the old router. The size of these aerials and the fact there there are 3 that can be position in various angles on the back of the router give me greater coverage than on my old router. The dual band works great and my newer devices (like my iPad) connect to the 5 Ghz signal while the older devices use the 2.4 Ghz signal. Both transmit simultaneously and give great range in a 3 bedroom detached house with the router upstairs. I would recommend staying with the firmware supplied in the router and not allowing it to be upgraded unless you are having problems, as I have a colleague with the same router who had issues with drop outs after upgrading the firmware. Highly recommend this model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic, Must Have For Gamers I purchased this product because my original router (Thomson TG585V7) was loosing ASDL connection but my provider could not see any errors at their end. So I looked around and discovered this product. I did not read the reviews as I had seen it on another website and ordered it but cancelled that order because I could click and collect it from a Maplin store near to me. The setup is super easy, there is even a Flash animation on a disk to show you how to. After installing it, I have seen a considerable gain in speed of upload/downloading in speedtest and my range has been boosted. A hand feature if this router is that it has a very simple port-forwarding system. Simply log into the router. Go to Forwarding and Virtual Servers. Enter the port you want to forward and the IPV4 of your PC and you are done. I needed this to host my own private Minecraft Server and the router is doing well so far. Another handy feature of this product is the amount of light indicators on the front. They are better than some because the are all cut differently and do not have small writing that you can't see from distance or in the dark. I have mostly been using the wired connections but the wireless connections are also very fast. To confirm it has 2.4GHz and 5GHz which is great if you need some connected door gaming and others for browsing the web. To cap of this lengthy review, this router is fantastic. A lot cheaper than others but no drop in performance or build quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommended Yes, its a good router with good range and plenty of options. However, I had to replace mine after 10 months as the 5GHz signal kept dropping. This maybe related to the Firmware upgrade so like another poster commented, be careful with the upgdates.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dual Band perfromance poor The 5GHz band keeps dropping out and causing 2.4 to drop out also. Not good and poor signal strength. Latest firmware worse than first.
