What is USB?
Commonly found on desktop computers and laptops, USB connections are among the most versatile type of connections. USB is primarily used for transferring data between devices, but it also has the ability to transfer power between compatible devices. Currently four versions of USB exist – USB 3.1 (10Gbps), USB 3.0 (5Gbps), USB 2.0 (480Mbps) and USB 1.1 (12Mbps). In most cases cables are compatible across all versions but maximum transfer speed may be limited. For example, a USB 2.0 cable in a USB 3.0 port would only provide a maximum transfer rate of 480Mbps, not 5Gbps. To achieve optimum transfer speeds here, a USB 3.0 cable should be used.

Why use this USB extension cable?
This cables uses a male USB-A 2.0 port to female USB-A 2.0 port, which allows you to extend an existing connection or move a USB connection point to another location without the hassle of moving your computer. This cable can be used to passively extend your connection up to a maximum of five meters, however a larger distance can be covered with help from an active USB repeater cable. The maximum transfer rate of this cable is 480Mbps when all devices are USB 2.0 compliant.

Why choose Maplin cables?
The Maplin range of cables features premium construction and specifications, with market-leading cable technology. Maplin cables are constructed from hard-wearing materials with colour-coded, compact connectors available for almost any use. All Maplin cables are quality assured, with a five year warranty across the range.

What does "Active" actually mean? does it draw extra power from the port? if so how much? is there restrictions to what type of USB ports it can be connected to? I would need to use a USB hub at the other end to power 2-4 devices, what is current limit?

Can I use this cable to extend a wired mouse to a CCTV DVR that is stored in a location away from the monitor?  I tried a Bluetooth mouse but the DVR didn't seem to recognise it so need to use a wired connection.

I have one of these cables or its predecessor. It has stopped working now I have upgraded to Windows 10. Can you tell me where I can download a driver? It come up as 'Device Descriptor Failed' Unknown USB device in device manager

Asked by: MCFH
Unplug the cable. Reboot your Windows 10 machine with driver signature enforcement disabled. Plug the cable back in. If the driver installs ... all is good .... reboot and carry on as normal If it does not then the cable is not Windows 10 compliant.
