If you’re looking for a central location to store your files and be able to access them locally and anywhere, this easy to use drive would be perfect for you (manufacturer’s code: STCT4000200). It is supplied with two 2TB Seagate NAS HDDs for a possible total storage capacity of 4TB. These NAS HDDs are optimised for running 24 hours a day, have improved vibration tolerance and advanced management capabilities. This means you have improved reliability and longevity of the drives compared to traditional HDDs that are used in a NAS environment.
The simplistic web interface of the Seagate NAS OS lets you easily allocate volumes, add and manage apps, configure RAID, create users and groups with specific access rights, create iSCSI targets and more. The OS also gives you the ability to use any attached USB devices to increase the overall storage of the NAS without having to replace the drives. The more standard RAID settings of JBOD, RAID 0 and 1 are a quite daunting to set up. That is why Seagate have set their own SimplyRAID configuration as the default configuration, which is a lot quicker and simple to setup compared to the more traditional RAID configurations. Compared to other configurations SimplyRAID builds the RAID array in the background, so you don’t need to wait for the RAID to be built before using the drive. Built into the NAS OS software, the SimplyRAID technology can help you choose the RAID configuration that is best for you, by balancing performance, capacity and redundancy.
There is support for third-party backup software for Windows computers and you can use Apple Time Machine for Mac computers. You could also use the included backup manager to schedule backups to happen regularly, whether that’s a full system backup or only when there has been a change in a certain folder.
Any files or backups stored on the NAS drive can be archived again by either using SimplyRAID or RAID 1, which creates copies of the files. Alternatively, you can use other methods to provide you with a contingency plan if a hard drive failure does occur. You can back up the files to a connected USB device, to another NAS drive that has Rsync server support and to Amazon S3 or Box cloud services. This helps to provide you with a safe offsite backup that you can use to restore any lost files. What applications can I use with this?
In addition to being able to use MyNAS to have remote access to your NAS drive, you can use Seagate’s Sdrive feature. From any desktop or laptop, you can access the NAS by clicking on the Sdrive icon. Then you can drag and drop files to store onto the NAS or open files from the NAS. You can download the Sdrive onto your smartphone too, giving you secure access to your files.
The NAS OS is not only limited to the file browser, backup manager and download manager you see on the dashboard. You can add other Seagate apps such as the Seagate surveillance manager, which turns your NAS into a NVR for your CCTV cameras. You could do even more with the NAS by installing third party apps, such as Plex, WordPress, ElephantDrive, Syncbox and more. Can I play and view media files on other devices?
The built-in UPnP and iTunes server and DLNA compatibility means you can stream your media files located on your NAS to a number of different devices. As long as your Smart TV, media player or speaker is connected to the same network as the NAS drive you can play your videos, view your pictures and listen to your music. What other features are there?
Through the NAS OS system you can create users and groups, assign them specific files storage sizes and access rights to certain files. A great feature for small businesses to share the centrally stored files with employees and clients or if you want to share your files with family and friends. What does (Used) mean?
