Bring your creations to life with 3D printing
The Velleman K8200 3D printer uses a single extruder designed for 3.00 mm filament, capable of printing using ABS and PLA. ABS provides a tougher and stronger finish but requires a higher temperature, around 230 Celsius, which makes it great for heat resistant parts. PLA is slightly flexible and requires a much lower temperature, around 210 Celsius, it is also non-toxic; it is also less prone to warping when printing. There are a variety of filament materials, finishes and colours available allowing you to create your 3D models exactly how you want them.

How easy is this 3D printer to set up and use?
The printer requires assembly, so it’s fantastic for electronics enthusiasts, whether it be one of many projects, or even a first project. To construct the Velleman K8200 3D Printer there will be soldering required, precision application of metalwork components, cable management instructions will also be provided to ensure there’s no snagging while it prints, you will also need to run through levelling the build plate and other first time set up prompts, which are fundamental to ensure your prints come out perfect every time. The skills gathered during the building of the Velleman K8200 3D Printer will prepare you for any potential troubleshooting issues you may incur, as well as the great experience stepping into electronics.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from you get what you pay for the problem with this printer is that the extruder isn't very well designed. the plastic snaps due to the tension. another problem is that when it does snap getting plastic back in is hard and aggravating. you need to take apart the extruder quite often to re load it due to blockages. The software needs some work as well as some objects it just rejects. on the positive side the prints it does are ok for the price and the build time is about 20 hours and the instructions are pretty good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from problem after problem I have had my printer for 3 months now and have yet to have a successfull print. There are many problems with this printer and Velleman customer support is rubbish. My first problem was a faulty circuit board which had to be returned. This took 6 weeks for me to get it back. I now have problems with the extruder which I am still trying to fix. I would really like to get my money backand buy another brand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good result after a lot of work and some extras needed to get quality output I bought this at the start of the year when they were on offer. I chose this kit because there are details about how to add a Mini Drill and make PCBs as well as 3D Print. I have waited until know to write a review as I wanted to have some experience before committing things in words. I didn't have too many issues assembling it but it did take a while to complete as I didn't rush. You really need to read the Velleman Forums before you start as they contain additional information about assembly. Its a pity they haven't incorporated the changes into the manuals as that would make assemble straight forward. You also need most of the tools in the manual, but I personally think an electronic vernier gauge is over kill. I didn't use mine at all. On the other hand I did buy a new set of small Metric spanners and Metric Hex Keys, both from Maplins and a small bicycle torque gauge from Halfords. There are a couple of real niggles though with the design. Its virtually impossible to get the print bed flat, and it really needs to be flat to get a good first layer. Its a PCB and when the element part heats up it expands causing the board to curl. The board mounting screws also protrude so you need to slightly re-work the countersunk holes. Velleman also recommend slightly enlarging the holes the bed adjusting screws pass through as otherwise its hard to get level. Velleman sell a glass panel that clips on the bed to solve this, but I used a piece of scrap picture glass secured with some "bulldog" style clips to hold it in place. The cooling fan also blows over the hot end causing temperature variations. You can print an improved fan mounts and air ducts. This helps cut down stringy bits. You may also want to add the cost a the Velleman Z-Axis upgrade as that dramatically improved the consistency and regularity of the layers. So after lots of tweaking , adding a bit of glass and a Z-Axis upgrade I am now reasonably happy with the results. Also check the terms of the guarantee. If you damage something in assembly it will be your problem, not Maplins. Also note that all support is via the Velleman Forums. Maplins will replace faulty parts, but not provide support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bit of kit Had this for four weeks and gets better every day :) Obviously it is quite a challenging build, but that is half the fun. Then, once you start getting into it you realise that callibration is absolutely key to getting a good print. Then ... when you think you've got it cracked ... you realise that you can make it even better with all the mods that you can find on the internet. Highly recommended!

I'ver looked at the sites where you get the software, and the history of  stereolithography is clearer than them, can i get a disk from you where it provides the right software, firmware etc?

Asked by: andy
The software is available from the following link http://www.k8200.eu/downloads/files/downloads/setup_repetierhost_k8200_0_95f.zip The main support website for the product can be found here http://www.k8200.eu/locale/ See the following link for assembly instructions http://www.k8200.eu/manual/building This is a self build / use item sold in kit form, it requires a reasonable amount of both mechanical and electronics skill to assemble the printer and familiarisation of various software suites to design edit and print objectsit is a project that should not be undertaken lightly.

What standards and regulations this printer abides for safety and functioning?

Asked by: Alex
The K8200 is a DIY 3D printer kit, it contains all the bits and pieces to construct your own 3D printer but does not contain additional protection. As it is a kit and not a finished product, compliance with the CE regulations depends on the build-quality; also the following notes must be taken into account. The full safety details, can be found on the following link: http://www.k8200.eu/downloads/0/user/usermanual_k8200.pdf

The instructions require the use of 6-PC PLASTIC TUNING NEEDLE SET. This isn't listed amongst the tools you say are required and I can't see any alternative (and your rivals are also out of stock) Is it possible to build the printer without these tools or should I return my printer for a refund ?
