What can I do with this timer?
Simply set your kitchen timer (manufacturer’s code MK128) to your chosen length of time, then either watch the cool LEDs countdown or wait for the alarm to tell you when your food is ready. With three settings of 1-10 minutes, 10-30 minutes and 30-60 minutes and different steps for each mode, you can set the timer to watch for anything between one minute and one hour. Watch the 16 LEDs countdown at regular intervals, or wait for the alarm to reach zero. The timer also has a pre-alarm warning, so you’re not taken by surprise at the last moment. The timer uses a single button, straightforward operation and has an auto power off feature to conserve battery. With 39 parts, this is a great kit for those familiar with the basics and looking to progress.

What can I learn from this timer kit?
Practise soldering and learn about electronics and circuits with this electronic kitchen timer kit. It uses resistors, capacitors, a transistor, potentiometer, a microchip and a buzzer, which will all help you learn how to connect a circuit. This circuit contains several different components, and gives a great opportunity to see them all in action. With just one button, this circuit is a great illustration of how much you can do with a microchip. This kit requires a soldering iron and solder and may require wire cutters and a small screwdriver.

How easy is this kit to solder?
This is a good challenge to those who want to move on to next level there are lots of similar components and components with polarities to watch for. Putting the kit together is just the start of your adventure. The kit comes an enclosure for the kit to protect the electronics. This kit requires three AAA batteries (not included) and comes with a battery holder on the back of the board.

Can the LEDs be switched for different colours? I would like to replace some of the reds with Yellow and Green (traffic light style) to help show the countdown to time-up for my autistic son. Would changing the colours have an effect on the circuit?

Asked by: Jude
Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee full compatibility for this product, as this is not the manner for which it was designed to be used. I would image with a little knowledge of circuit design it may be possible but we can't advise on this kind of thing.

If the circuit starts to time and the power is interupted, does the circuit reset and start timing from the start when power is restored? How is the time period set - for example by potentiometer?

Asked by: vulcan
Unfortunately not. If the power is turned of then restored you would need to start the timer again with the button on the front. the timer period is set by a small potentiometer.

I want to put a micro switch on a freezer door so that when opened it turns a timer on. If the door doesn't shut when the time is up an alarm sounds. If I use this circuit with the switch in the power supply line will this work and reset on each opening?

Asked by: vulcan
As much as we would love to be able to help here, as Technical Support Advisor's we cannot offer design project advice or assistance, we are more than happy to locate products and support you with your purchases but we are not able to design entire circuits or projects for you. If you do have the design/circuit information detailing the value of the components needed we will be happy to locate these for you.

Does the timer give any indication of countdown? I am interested in a two minute timer for taking turns in a game, but need to have an indication of how far through the countdown it is.
Asked by: PP
Yes, the LEDs count down as the timer reaches zero.
