Centralise your media files and access them from anywhere
This WD My Cloud 3TB NAS drive (manufacturer’s code: WDBCTL0030HWT-EESN) lets you keep all your pictures, videos and music in a central place and access them anywhere in the world, without having to pay a monthly fee. A 3TB hard drive is pre-installed, giving you the storage space for up to 99 hours of 1080p video at 30fps, 750 two-hour DVD movies, 960,000 digital pictures or 49,800 hours of digital music. If extra space is needed in the future you can connect an external USB drive to the USB 3.0 port for an immediate boost.

What are some of the backups I can do with this NAS drive?
Set automatic backups for your Windows or Apple Mac computer with WD SmartWare Pro for Windows and Apple’s own Time Machine program for Macs. Backups can be set to either save whole folders/all information on the computer or to backup only when changes have been made. This gives you the choice between a slower but more thorough backup and a quicker backup.

To make sure any backups are completely safe, a second copy (safe points) can be created and saved to an external location on your network or on an attached USB drive. If the My Cloud device fails, the snap shot of settings and any backups made at the specific time the safe point was created allows you to easily recover your data.

What are some of the apps I can use with this?
The dedicated My Cloud app, which is available for Apple iOS and Android smart devices, lets you upload to and view files from your personal cloud anywhere. This helps to free up space on your smart devices, so you can install more apps and take more pictures and videos. You can also transfer files between your Dropbox account and the My Cloud through the My Cloud app, giving you the ability to integrate your public cloud account with your own private cloud.

Can I send files wirelessly to smart devices?
Stream your music/video collections or your travel pictures to a smart TV, media player, speaker, games console or any other DLNA or UPnP compatible device connected to the same network as the My Cloud. As My Cloud is DLNA and UPnP certified it can act as a server for each of these clients to access.

Can more than one person have access to this?
Multiple user accounts can be set up and given access to their own folder within the WD My Cloud. You could also give them access to shared folders too. This makes it great for anyone who wants to share the NAS with multiple employees or just with friends and family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works with Linux ! Found this product very easy to use with Linux.... From command prompt do an arp -a command. Make a note of IP addresses (if any). Connect drive to network and switch on. Wait a few minutes to boot. Type arp -a again to find the IP address just added. Type the IP address into a web browser and the NAS configuration page should be displayed. Very intuitive user interface - easy to set up. LAN access works fine once you have setup some access accounts. Obviuosly if you have a Wifi router, you can access via Wifi. Haven't tried remote access though so not sure if that is supported when running Linux system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Up and running in minutes I read the reviews before purchasing at the lower price. I thought it was worth the punt. Plugged it in, logged on via browser, updated the firmware. Rebooted and started copying over my music and videos. No problems at all and not as slow as reviews are suggesting. Streaming content while copying too without an issue. I have a few NAS drives of different makes and this one isn't bad at all. I'd recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible and Buggy I bought this a week ago and have spend hours every night trying to get it to work - without success. The drive seems to work initially, but then every day stops synching. It also randomly stops connecting. After reading for hours each night on the internet, watching several videos, reading the manual, and resetting the drive four times I still can't get it to work. I turns out this is an ongoing problem for many many people (according to several forums I read). Totally unreliable. Really disappointed as this looked like a brilliant drive. Will try to return - as is basically a brick that I can't use to synch or back-up my data.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 'Housekeeping' is so slow, so very, very slow... As a *first* media NAS drive, this may be okay, with house-keeping, thumb-nailing etc done incrementally, but I ported over a heap of stuff from a failing Seagate 3TB GoFlex NAS. Even though I set up a non-DLNA 'share' {'folder'} for my 15GB research archive, the myCloud still set about thumb-nailing the ~200k files. This took four (4) days *after* I closed the resource-intensive UI. With that open, it did about one (1%) percent a day. Similarly, when I 'mirrored' our modest PC, thumb-nailing that took three days. So, a weekly 'mirror' of PC and lap-top would need a week to thumb-nail, meaning the poor myCloud would never, ever nap... WD forum guru kindly suggested an arcane set of command-line actions to disable thumb nailing, but at my own risk. No, thanks !! Also, even when the drive seemed idle, I could not persuade it to 'nap'. The only time I've seen it dormant {'slow blue blink'} was after purging the drive to 'factory'. And even that took upwards of 15 hours... D'uh. As a home DLNA server, with some family albums, home movies etc, it seemed okay. Faced with the house-keeping for a 'basic' NAS drive it simply ran out of steam, so is going back for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use Great unit that does what it says. I transferred my Led Zeppelin collection of 130GB (600+ CDs) overnight with no problems at all. Even when I switch the router off for 10 seconds to rest the router, the WD re-connects immediately. Everything on the network finds it immediately for playback. Additionally I can know play my music files abroad. Highly recommended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Possibly the riskiest device you can buy I wanted a fast external hard drive but the concept of a hard drive that could be accessed from my other devices seemed a perfect solution. A solution that relied on one major feature- you need to access the drive by logging on via the cloud. What happens when the WD cloud refuses to register your log on. I tried 3 times to create an identity but each time WD failed to recognise me or any of the alternative identities despite saying in the startup that I had correctly created both my name and the alternatives. The result was that I could not access the drive that I could see on my network. I returned the product to Maplin -with no hassle- but the thought of running with a system that relied on the faulty WD cloud meant I purchased a simply external drive rather than one subject to external third party problems

Is this a solid state HD? And can I use this for an IP camera to write to over my internal network via IP address?

Asked by: Markyc
No this us not solid state and the second part of the question will depend on what the IP camera supports so I can't say.

Is it possible to use this device solely to dump data from an iPhone / iPad to free up memory without the use of a pc/ laptop? I need to know this definitively prior to potentially purchasing. Any advice on this gratefully received, Thankyou.

Asked by: Gill39
Unfortunately this may not be possible as the initial setup lists requirements of either a PC or Macto install software to, or a Windows or Mac web browser (no mobile operating systems listed). Once set up and linked to a mobile device however, the full computer would not be required for operation. Full setup instructions and requirements can be viewed in the manual located at the following link;
