Product overview

• 4TB desktop hard drive gives you a huge storage capacity for all your documents, pictures and videos
• USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed) connections can transfer up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, while the drive spins at 7,200rpm
• Perfect for storing all your valuable documents and pictures as a backup
• Formatted for use with Mac computers straight out of the box with Windows compatibility

What can I store on this hard drive?
This hard drive has 4TB (4,000GB) of storage, so you have plenty of space for your files. You can store up to 31 hours of 4K video at 30 fps, 132 hours of 1080p video at 30 fps, 1,000 two-hour DVD films, 1.28 million digital photos or 66,400 hours of digital music.

What makes this hard drive different?
This hard drive is pre-formatted to work with the Mac operating software which means it is ready to run straight out of the box. You can still use the hard drive with Windows and this will require formatting to NTFS or FAT32, which is explained within the enclosed instructions.

What difference does USB 3.0 make?
USB 3.0, when plugged into a USB 3.0 socket, can transfer data up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use it with USB 2.0. This hard drive is backwards compatible, meaning you are able to use it with USB 2.0, without the need to update your computer. This means you spend less time waiting to ensure your documents, pictures and videos are safely stored on your external hard drive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great warranty. Switch power on at the wall not at the MyBook power input. I've got one of these and I want to warn you that if anything goes wrong with this hard-drive under warranty contact the manufacturer... Register the device online and you're covered... I needed to retrieve my work data very urgently after the 'mybook' stopped working shortly after purchase. I suspected it was only the power supply because it had made a small bang plugging it in. I ripped out the hard drive from the enclosure, pulled apart the connections and retrieved the data. Then I contacted the manufacturer who agreed to honor the warranty even though I'd destroyed the housing (so long as I sent all the parts back together). Typically I'd left the bits of broken housing on the kitchen side and my Wife threw them out on the evening the bin men were due.. My fault.. Now I couldn't send it back under waranty. So I re-connected the HD intending to use it in a docking station but for some reason the drive had changed to RAW and was now only usable if I formatted (NTFS). Fortunately I'd rescued the info earlier and now I have an ugly 4TB internal hard-drive sat in a docking station connected via USB and it's working fast and well. The moral of the story, - read the warranty, - don't put all your eggs in one basket and put stuff away before the Mrs tidies it up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WD external drive for MAC I bought this as a personal backup of my PC. After a quick format of the drive it was PC compatible. It was by far the cheapest price and the ordering and collecting from Maplin was seemless. If you dont mind a silver case this drive should do you proud.

In the manual it lists the Mac OS's which are compatible, but there is no mention of Yosemite (El Capitan). Are these not compatible? Thanks

Does this have an off/on switch ?- if not when the computer is turned off does it stay powered on standby?

Asked by: Richard
There is no physical power switch, so the drive would assume an idle state when the computer is off or on standby/hibernate. However, once ejected properly from the system it would be safe to remove the power supply or unplug from the mains without damage to the drive.

Can this be plugged into a powered hub, or does it require to be plugged directly into the Mac?

Asked by: Met497
Either or .... you can attach directly to Mac or plug into a Hub, direct connection to the Mac with a USB 3 port would deliver the best performance results.

My iMac has USB and FireWire ports, no USB3. Is this drive compatible with FireWire? If so it sounds like a possibility. If not does Maplin have other FireWire alternatives?

Asked by: AntMac
Unfortunately this is not FireWire compatible and we do not stock a FireWire alternative.
