Centralising important files, media or documentation can provide you with convenience when you are working on multiple devices, especially if you can access these files from anywhere around the world, and this My Cloud EX2 can do exactly that (manufacture's code: WDBVKW0060JCH-EESN). Already pre-installed are two 3TB WD red hard drives that provide you with a total of 6TB storage space, these can always be replaced by higher capacity drives at a later date to expand storage capacity if needed. The WD red hard drives have been optimised to deal with NAS applications, with increased reliability during 24/7 operations compared to other drives. This can be expanded even further to suit your growing needs, all you need to do is to simply add an external USB drive into one of the USB3.0 ports, for an instant boost.
What are the backup options I can use with this NAS drive?
Backing up computers couldn’t be easier with WD SmartWare Pro for Window computers and compatibility with Apple Time Machine for Apple Mac computers. You can schedule backups to happen on a regularly basis for your most important files or for your whole computer. You can also have the NAS to backup only when a folder or your computer has made a recent change, speeding up the backup process.
Nobody likes to lose files and it is even worse when the backup you have made turns out to have failed as well. To avoid such a situation the My Cloud EX2 has been set at RAID 1 as a default. Under this setting, one of your hard drives installed is used to store the data sent to this NAS. The second one then copies the data stored on the first one. This supplies you with a contingency, so if any data is lost you have a backup ready. Since one of the drives is used as a mirror of the other, this reduces the stock storage space you have to just 6TB.
An added external USB device doesn’t just have to be used to expand the amount of storage you have, you can dedicate the connected USB device as a backup location too. Similarly, integration with Amazon S3 and ElephantDrive cloud services allows you to backup data stored on the My Cloud EX2 to the cloud. If you own another My Cloud EX2 or an EX4 you can also remotely backup your data to it, no matter where it is in the world. This gives you a number of backup options to choose from, which is essential for businesses and anyone who does not want to lose important data.
What apps can I use with this NAS drive?
For Apple iOS or Android devices, WD photos and My Cloud apps are available, providing you with access to the NAS drive from anywhere. You can greatly customise the My Cloud EX2 with a number of apps compatible, such as iTunes or Plex. Plex is an app that can be used to organise your media files, with the dedicated app being downloadable on a number of different devices such as Smart TVs, computers, tablets and more, you can stream your content to them. As a default, http downloader, FTP, P2P and web file viewer are already installed. These apps allow you to automate and schedule downloads/backups to happen through a web link, share files and view the content of the NAS via the dashboard.
Can I stream with this NAS drive?
Aside from using Plex to stream content to devices, the My Cloud EX2 uses TwonkyMedia as its DLNA media server. This lets you stream your music, photos and videos to DLNA compatible devices, such as media players, games consoles, speakers and more, which are connected to the same network as the My Cloud EX2. And with iTunes support you can stream your music collection too.
What are some of the other features?
Users can be created and then given access to the My Cloud EX2 and portions of the drive can be assigned to individuals or groups, this makes it perfect for small business which want to use the My Cloud EX2 as a server for their employees. An UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can be connected to this NAS drive via USB or network, which provides you with a temporary power source for your server should the main power source ever go out.
Support for iSCSI gives you the ability to make a virtual storage location for your computer (your computer believes the drive created is a local hard drive). This allows you to manage storage over long distances and transfer data over a network rather than locally.
