Centralise your media files and access them from anywhere
Store and organise your collection of pictures, videos and music in a central place with this WD My Cloud 2TB NAS drive (manufacturer’s code: WDBCTL0020HWT-EESN). Supplied with 2TB of storage space, you are able to store approximately 500 two-hour DVD films and 640,000 digital pictures, and any files stored will be accessible from anywhere (as long as you have an internet connection). If you need extra storage space in the future you can connect an external USB drive to the USB 3.0 port, which will increase the storage space immediately.

What are some of the backups I can do with this NAS drive?
Set automatic backups for your Windows or Apple Mac computer with WD SmartWare Pro for Windows and Apple’s own Time Machine program for Macs. Backups can be set to either save whole folders/all information on the computer or to backup only when changes have been made. This gives you the choice between a slower but more thorough backup and a quicker backup.

To make sure any backups are completely safe, a second copy (safe points) can be created and saved to an external location on your network or on an attached USB drive. If the My Cloud device fails, the snap shot of settings and any backups made at the specific time the safe point was created allows you to easily recover your data.

What are some of the apps I can use with this?
The dedicated My Cloud app, which is available for Apple iOS and Android smart devices, lets you upload to and view files from your personal cloud anywhere. This helps to free up space on your smart devices, so you can install more apps and take more pictures and videos. You can also transfer files between your Dropbox account and the My Cloud through the My Cloud app, giving you the ability to integrate your public cloud account with your own private cloud.

Can I send files wirelessly to smart devices?
Stream your music/video collections or your travel pictures to a smart TV, media player, speaker, games console or any other DLNA or UPnP compatible device connected to the same network as the My Cloud. As My Cloud is DLNA and UPnP certified it can act as a server for each of these clients to access.

Can more than one person have access to this?
Multiple user accounts can be set up and given access to their own folder within the WD My Cloud. You could also give them access to shared folders too. This makes it great for anyone who wants to share the NAS with multiple employees or just with friends and family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Bought this drive today, only just seen the reviews on this. I have setup this in my home and transferred all my old external drives onto this. setup was easy, speeds transferring are good 30mb/s ish, interface easy to use, external access easy to setup and use across all devices mobile and pc based. don't know if these reviews are from people using this drive with old firmware or something but I have had zero problems with it so far. great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice little NAS! Having bought this NAS a few weeks back now, I am glad I did! Now don't expect to be able to transfer 1 or 2tb of data to it quickly, you will need a gigabit router to do it at some speed, but it will take a very long time! The firmware has needed a couple of updates and the drive does that automatically if you set it from WD. I've set it up so that it is central storage for myself and my partner, it is also a media storage for my smart Blu Ray player. Gaining access to the drive from a computer is easy, just download the WD discover software and it will find it, and allow you to set it up on the network, it is worth setting it up as a static IP address on your router as DHCP is OK, but can cause problems with mapping network drives if you need that feature (which I prefer). The long painstaking process of copying data from your computer or another backup drive will need to begin. Please never expect this to be quick, it really will never be! I have around 1TB of it used already for backup and media serving. Accessing the drive via an iPhone or Android phone is a piece of cake with the MyCloud App, and once you have set the drive up on the app, it communicates with WD and gives your routers IP address so that the cloud is seemless. I had a few teething problems, mainly my own fault, but now that the drive is all set up, it is working as I expected it to be. Streaming video from it is always dependent on the wi-fi you have available, or 4G/3G network, but if a movie is around 700mb, it does access it pretty quickly, but might take a couple of minutes to buffer enough to get it working, local networking, it is really rapid access, only a few seconds from clicking the video and it playing on your tablet/phone! I am actually getting another one in the coming months so that I can have extra capacity, but I don't expect to fill it up any time soon! Great purchase, wish I had done it a long time ago!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice Looking , Shame It doesn't work I wish i had read the other reviews before getting this . I purchased a month ago to use as a simple storage device for music to stream to my network amplifier. Easy to set up but transfering files to it took forever , 84.5gb in 53 hours ! . ( although only 1hr 40 mins to copy it all back off, but then deleting it all took 2hrs ? ) I was looking to put approx 1.6tb on this drive but i think the guarantee will be up before it actually manages it ... Ok if i just allow pc to go to sleep but i dare not shut the pc down , because when booting up again , this device is not recognised , the only way i have found of accessing it again is to uninstall it , re-install it and pray ! Sometimes it says my password is wrong , so i put the same password in again and again until it works which eventually it does. When working , it streams music very well , without any kind of lag, hitch etc but overall totally unacceptable performance and this ones going straight back , then im off to buy a quality item .... Be warned and take note of the reviews.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed! I needed to replace my ageing 1st gen Apple TV which holds my ITunes library. Having copied the library onto this device I can now play music through my Ruark R2. I can either access it directly through the Ruark or use their app. It worked first time and is brilliant. One surprise was that I can access all files on the WD from wherever I am as long as I have internet access! ( I know I should have known this!) Highly recommend- simple to use and so far very reliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delighted! So pleased with my purchase. It was very easy to set up including for phone/tablet access over internet. Upload speeds are a bit slow for large data volumes but maybe my home network is something to do with that. I bought it mainly as a file server and so far have found it perfect for that purpose.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good idea and very bad implementation I took the first one back a month ago just within 2 weeks of purchasing because it was temperamental. The replacement isn't any different. You have been warned this device doesn't work. Iam forced to give 1 star by default is should be none

Rated 1 out of 5 by from do not buy it It is so slow that it is impossible to use it. My mac is unable to access the files within reasonable time. I tried everything and it is impossible to work with it. I will be trying to get refund and buy anything else but there is a problem i copy all my stuff in to it and now i do not have anything to copy it back.

Sorry we would be unable to comment on suitability for use with 3rd party software. Would I actually be renting space in a cloud storage elsewhere?

No, by cloud it means you can access the device when away from the location the drive is at via apps you set up.
