Instantly increase your storage to meet your needs
Store and backup your precious memories in a central location with this WD Mirror 4TB NAS drive (manufacturer’s code: WDBWVZ0040JWT-EESN). Two 2TB WD red hard drives give you a potential maximum storage space of 4TB. The hard drives have been designed to perform well, even under the constant stress of 24/7 operation, which makes them perfect for this NAS drive. To give an immediate increase in the storage space an external USB drive can be inserted into one of the two USB 3.0 ports, for a quick and easy way to meet your growing needs.

What kind of backups can I set up?
You can back up your Windows computer via the WD SmartWare Pro application or Mac computers via Apple Time Machine. The backups can be scheduled to happen automatically, covering a single folder or the complete computer. Alternatively, you can set backups to automatically occur when a change has been made in the folder/computer, speeding up the backup process.

To ensure files and backups are stored safely on the NAS drive and not lost during a rare disk failure, WD has configured this to be RAID 1 as a default. This disk management setting essentially uses one of the two hard drives to ‘mirror’ content that is stored on the other. This means you have the same content on the two drives and if one were to ever fail, you would have a backup available. This setting also limits the stock storage you will initially have to just 2TB.

Any attached USB devices can be used as a target for backups, as well as being used to increase the overall storage of your NAS drive. Likewise, the compatibility with Amazon S3 and ElephantDrive allows you to backup what is stored on the WD Mirror to the cloud. Owners of more than one My Cloud Mirror or a My Cloud EX4 can arrange for information on this NAS drive to be saved remotely. This multitude of backup options help to secure your data to make certain it doesn’t get lost when a drive failure does occur.

What apps are available for this NAS drive?
Free up space on your Apple iOS or Android smart device, with the My Cloud app, allowing you to save and backup your pictures and videos to your own personal cloud storage. Apps can be installed onto the WD Mirror, and as a default, http downloader, FTP, P2P and web file viewer are already installed. These apps allow you to automate and schedule downloads/backups to happen through a web link, share files and view the content of the NAS via the dashboard. Third party apps can be installed as well, such as WordPress, Plex and aMule, so you can customise the Mirror to suit your needs.

What can I stream to with this NAS drive?
The DLNA and UPnP certification of the NAS drives means as long as other DLNA and UPnP devices are connected to the same network, media files can be streamed to the device. Smart TVs, media players and speakers are just some example of such devices. Installing Plex on the NAS drive also lets you stream to any smart device that can install the Plex app, opening up the range of different devices you can stream to.

What other features are available?
You can create users and give them access to the WD Mirror. Users or groups can then be assigned portions of the drive to either share or use themselves. This makes it perfect for small businesses to utilise the WD Mirror as a server for their employees. To avoid interruptions in the constant operation of this NAS drive, an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can be connected via USB or network, giving you temporary power if your power supply goes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flexible but complex - 2 sides of the coin I bought this because it had the drives pre-installed, but even so setup was not straightforward. Nothing told me how to get into the admin facility from my Windows PC and I eventually succeeded from an iPad (free app). The user manual (which I had to search for) referred to facilities I didn't have - until the iPad app offered to upgrade the firmware. Then it started to make sense. You CAN use a full 4TB if you want to change the RAID configuration. You can install 3rd party apps, configure access in all sorts of ways (including remote). But out of the box I was able to stream photos and music to iPad, TV, Android phone on my home network. Overall very impressive, but not for the faint-hearted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect - does exactly what I need Great product. Provided that you set it up step by step and then work your way through the menus and options it's easy to configure to do what you need. Works great using all the apps from the iPhone and iPad too. Fabulous!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is 2TB mirror drive, NOT 4TB Maplin's site advertises this as a 4TB drive. It is not. It has two 2TB drives, one of which exactly mirrors the other. Good for security, not for the storage as described, which is only half at less than 2TB. No doubt a good product, but only way down in the small print is it made clear that one 2TB drive mirrors the other. This only became clear to me (and I know a lot about IT) as I was setting the device up, and astonished to find that the total storage was under 2TB. It is wrong to state that this has a maximum possible storage of 4TB. Maplin customer service was very reluctant to accept the case for a return, although after going through to higher-ups, I am hoping to be able to exchange this for what I thought I had ordered.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This thing doesn't work, it keeps dropping the connection even if it's right next to the router. As soon as the connection is dropped my Timeline doesn't recognize it as a HD and need to re-install it again. I've done this about 7 times now. Maybe it's just my product is faulty, but I'm changing it for another product. Having said that, Maplin have been great so far ini costumer care.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from wd mycloud Mirror 4tb NAS Bought this to upgrade my rather old NAS unit. No documentation apart form a piece of card saying how to install in 3 easy steps, Took me over 24 hours before my win7 pc could interact with it and that included having to do a full factory reset, then found there was no software supplied with it to do backups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Storage Solution Bought this to be able to reduce the amount of pictures and music on my phone but still have access to it and it does the job very well indeed.

Can the contents of a USB 3.0 external HD, attached to this device, be seen on a device connected to the NAS drive over the internet? Assuming fast enough transfer rates are available, can a FLAC audio file be played using the above connection?

Asked by: Cole hole
There are USB 3.0 sockets available for the connection of additional storage, these should appear alongside the NAS drive itself as networked storage. Network speeds and compatible software permitting, there should be no issues playing a FLAC file from one of those connected drives.
