The R16 Recorder:Interface:Controller from ZOOM is a three-in-one studio which takes your session anywhere. It seamlessly combines multi-track recording, an audio interface and control surface capability in a mobile production studio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been meaning to review the ZoomR16 ever since purchase. These are amazing multitrack studios. There are so many features setting it above the rest, that I need to think where I should start (sorry alesis). Okay, so first thing's first. These are 299quid, so if you buy something else with them, then you can top up the order price to the full 300. This will allow you to use the online maplin 25quid email voucher to get the zoomr16 at pretty much 275. Maplin are so cool when it comes to a bargain on these wonderful devices. Ok the second thing about the zoomR16 is that you dont need to use it with a computer if you don't want to. Totally portable, so it can be used on its own forever running from mains or from batteries. Technology has hit a sweet spot with these by allowing the power consumption to be so low that you can use commonplace AA batteries like you'd find in any shop (if you arent near a socket to use the included mains adaptor). The manual is the simplest I have ever read, even explaining to new users the different ways of applying effects, before and/or after recording if you wish to do that. Oh and the range of effects on the zoomr16 are astounding. I had a "silent headphones-only" rock band practice (to avoid annoying my neighbours) by plugging in a roland electronic drum kit, a bass with no amp and a fender stratocaster guitar. I had 40 to 50 distortions to choose from. There are so many other effects like compression for vocals or drums, or reverbs, chorus etc... all rivalling any multi-fx unit I've used recently. If you do wish to plug into a PC or MAc, you can record 8 tracks straight to the computer hard disk via usb. It also acts as a mackie control surface so that the sliders and knobs will work with any supporting software (all the main ones, easy and advanced, like cubase, abelton, logic audio etc, take your pick). Now get this... I bought 2 of these because you can link them together with the supplied cable to record 16 tracks simultaneously (with or without a computer). The fact that these don't require a computer means that, unlike other devices which rely on future operating systems supporting them, this thing will never go out of date as a stand alone recorder. It also has phantom power on 2 of the microphone/line inputs, great for condensor mics such as matched pairs of c1000's for use with overhead drum kit cymbal recording or a stereo Blumlein stereo microphone for vocals. As I have 2 units, I get four. The zoomR24 has even more. The recording quality of the zoom is excellent. If you want to record higher than CD quality, then it will record two tracks at once but frankly the digital to analogue convertors are mic preamps on this thing are so clear that I doubt you'd need to. I go for 8 track recording with 16 track playback (or 16 track recording with 32 track playback using two units) as each track is stereo. The zoomR24 is also a beefed up version providing 24 playback tracks (i.e. 48 over two units) while they both appear compatible with each other. If you are in any sort of live music band, whether it is a rock band with a drummer, keyboardist, bassist etc or if you are a DJ with multiple decks or vocalists, then you owe it to the music community to pick up this powerful device so you can make your own records. Kids can use simple equipment like these zooms. Are your little rebels in a band? Or perhaps your parents are? Is it their birthday soon? I think these would make great gifts. I have also used it for mastering 7.1 surround sound. You can use a hdmi to component rca/3.5mm jack convertor to backup your own surround sound audio collection, or make a new one. I bet that if you buy one of these zoomR16's, you will fall in love with it before buying another to link it together. Same goes for the zoomr24. These devices will go down in history! Amazing amazing! You know......

It says that it is bundled with Cubase LE4 but Zoom say on their website that it has LE8. As I have windows 10 this is important, as far as I am aware LE4 is incompatible with Windows 10. Can you let me know which Cubase is included?thanks

Asked by: Goolong
Unfortunately we do not have this information, but we will request a unit from stock and update you shortly.
