A smart doorbell is a connected device with a built-in camera, microphone, and speaker that lets you see and talk to visitors through your smartphone, even when you're not home.

Most smart doorbells require a WiFi connection to send notifications, stream live video, and enable two-way audio through your smartphone. Without WiFi, some models like the Reolink range can still record footage locally to a microSD card, but you won't receive real-time alerts or be able to speak to visitors remotely. If your WiFi is unreliable, consider using a Wi-Fi range extender, a model with local storage as a backup, or a wired doorbell with a PoE (Power over Ethernet) connection for a more stable link.

When someone rings the bell or triggers motion detection, the smart doorbell sends an alert to your phone. You can then view a live video feed, talk to the visitor, or review recorded footage.

Wired doorbells connect to your home's existing low-voltage doorbell wiring and never need charging, making them ideal for busy households. Wireless doorbells run on rechargeable batteries or standard cells and can be installed in minutes without any wiring, which suits renters or anyone wanting a quick setup. Smart video doorbells are available in both wired and wireless versions — wired models offer uninterrupted power for features like 24/7 continuous recording, while wireless models offer more flexible placement around your door.
