What are NVRs?

A Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the heart of a modern wired security system. Unlike older DVR-based setups, an NVR works with high-definition IP cameras, capturing and storing crisp, detailed footage directly over a network connection.

NVR systems are typically supplied as complete kits, including the recorder unit, a set of cameras, and often a pre-installed hard drive — making them straightforward to set up and expand over time. Cameras connect to the NVR via Ethernet cable, which carries both power (via PoE — Power over Ethernet) and video data through a single cable, keeping installation neat and simple.

Once set up, an NVR records continuously or on motion detection, storing footage locally on an internal hard drive. Most modern systems also connect to your home network, allowing you to view live and recorded footage remotely via a smartphone app, receive instant motion alerts, and optionally back up clips to the cloud.

FAQ

What's the difference between NVR and DVR?

An NVR (Network Video Recorder) works with IP cameras over a network connection, delivering higher image quality and more flexible installation. A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) uses analogue cameras connected via coaxial cable. NVR systems like those from Swann and Reolink are the modern standard for home and business security.

Do I need a professional to install an NVR system?

No — Swann and Reolink kits are designed for straightforward DIY installation, with step-by-step guides and app-based setup included.

How many cameras can I connect to one NVR?

This depends on the NVR model. Swann and Reolink offer systems supporting anywhere from 4 to 16 channels, so you can choose a kit that suits the size of your property.

Can I view footage remotely on my phone?

Yes. Both Swann and Reolink have dedicated apps that let you view live and recorded footage from anywhere with an internet connection.
