What are NVRs?
A Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the heart of a modern wired security system. Unlike older DVR-based setups, an NVR works with high-definition IP cameras, capturing and storing crisp, detailed footage directly over a network connection.
NVR systems are typically supplied as complete kits, including the recorder unit, a set of cameras, and often a pre-installed hard drive — making them straightforward to set up and expand over time. Cameras connect to the NVR via Ethernet cable, which carries both power (via PoE — Power over Ethernet) and video data through a single cable, keeping installation neat and simple.
Once set up, an NVR records continuously or on motion detection, storing footage locally on an internal hard drive. Most modern systems also connect to your home network, allowing you to view live and recorded footage remotely via a smartphone app, receive instant motion alerts, and optionally back up clips to the cloud.
