Dehumidifiers & Air Purifiers

Dehumidifiers & Air Purifiers at Maplin

What is a Dehumidifier?

Both dehumidifiers and air purifiers improve indoor air quality, but they serve different purposes. A dehumidifier reduces excess moisture in the air, helping to prevent mould, damp, condensation, and dust mites—common problems in humid or poorly ventilated spaces like basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

In contrast, an air purifier removes airborne pollutants such as dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and allergens by using filters like HEPA or activated carbon. They’re ideal for people with asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions and are commonly used in bedrooms, living rooms, and offices.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a dehumidifier and an air purifier?

A dehumidifier reduces moisture levels in the air to prevent mould, damp, and condensation. An air purifier filters airborne particles like dust, allergens, and smoke to improve air quality.

Will a dehumidifier help with mould?

Yes. Dehumidifiers lower humidity, which makes it harder for mould and mildew to grow. However, they don’t remove existing mould spores from the air—that’s a job for an air purifier.

Do dehumidifiers clean the air?

Not exactly. While they reduce humidity that can contribute to allergens, they don’t filter particles. For cleaner air, use a HEPA air purifier alongside a dehumidifier.

Do air purifiers help with pet dander and smoke?

Yes. Air purifiers with HEPA and activated carbon filters are highly effective at removing pet allergens, cigarette smoke, cooking odours, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
