What is an MC4 Cable?

MC4 cables are the standard connectors used to wire solar panels together and link them to an inverter or charge controller. Named after the "Multi-Contact 4mm" connector they use, each cable ends in a locking, single-pole plug and socket that click together to form a watertight, weatherproof joint — rated IP67 or higher — making them suitable for permanent outdoor installation. They're designed to carry the DC output from panels safely, typically handling around 30A and up to 1000V, and allow panels to be connected in series or parallel without any soldering. It's worth noting that MC4 is a DC connector purpose-built for panel wiring, not a mains plug, so it can't be connected directly to a household wall socket — that's a separate job handled by the inverter and, where applicable, a mains lead.

Can MC4 connectors be plugged into a normal wall socket?


No — MC4 is a DC connector for panel-to-inverter wiring, not a mains plug. It's physically a different shape to a UK 3-pin plug and isn't designed for mains AC. If you're after a plug-in solar unit that connects to a household socket, that's a separate product category with its own factory-fitted mains lead (and its own safety spec, as of the new UK rules from 27 August 2026).

Are MC4 connectors weatherproof?


Yes — when properly mated, they're rated IP67 (dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion), which is why they're the standard choice for outdoor panel wiring. IP68-rated versions are available for extra protection in damp or flood-prone spots.

How do I safely disconnect MC4 connectors?


Never unplug them under load. Isolate the circuit first (switch off the inverter/charge controller), then use an MC4 disconnect tool or the release clip to unlock the connector — pulling on the cable without releasing the lock can damage the housing or contacts.
