What is a Smart Door Lock?
A smart door lock replaces or upgrades a standard lock so you can lock and unlock your door without a traditional key. Depending on the model, you can get in with a smartphone app, a PIN code on a keypad, a fingerprint, a key fob, or a voice command through assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant. Most connect over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or a smart home hub. That lets you check whether the door is locked, open it remotely for a visitor or delivery, and give family, guests or tradespeople temporary digital access that you can cancel at any time. Many also keep an activity log showing who came and went and when, and some lock automatically as you leave. Some smart locks fit over your existing lock on the inside of the door, so they suit renters, while others replace the whole lock. Most still take a physical key or have an emergency power option in case the batteries run out.
