Plug-In Solar Kits at Maplin

What is a Plug-In Solar Kit?

Plug-in solar kits let you generate your own electricity without a full rooftop installation - ideal for renters, flats, or anyone wanting a low-cost way to cut energy bills. A typical kit is usually one or two panels plus a microinverter that plugs into a wall socket. These became legal in Great Britain only from 27 August 2026, under rules capping the inverter at 800VA and requiring a direct socket connection, with no extension leads or adaptors. You'll also need to notify your network operator (G98) and, if renting, get your landlord's consent, as it's still treated as grid-connected generation.

Rules current as of August 2026 — always worth a quick check with your electrician or network operator before you buy.

FAQ

Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?

Yes, in Great Britain. Plug-in ("balcony") solar became legal in England, Scotland and Wales on 27 August 2026. Northern Ireland is expected to follow. Only complete products that meet the UK Interim Product Specification qualify. Older or imported kits don't become legal automatically.

Can I just plug it into any socket?

It must plug directly into a suitable wall socket on a socket circuit, not a lighting, cooker, boiler or spur circuit. Extension leads, multi-way adaptors, travel adaptors and plug-in RCD adaptors aren't allowed. Compliant products come with a factory-fitted, non-rewireable BS 1363 plug fused at 5A or less. Modern RCBO protection on the circuit is strongly recommended.

Do I need an electrician?

Usually not, if you're installing a compliant plug-in product. Products not listed as compliant on the ENA register need to be hardwired by a registered electrician. Energy Saving Trust guidance also suggests asking an electrician if your panel capacity goes above 960W.

How much power can a plug-in solar system produce?

The inverter's output is capped at 800VA, with a maximum AC output current of 3.5A. You can connect more panel capacity (up to about 2,000W), and the inverter limits what goes into your home's wiring.

Do I need to tell my electricity network operator?

Yes. Grid-connected generation, including plug-in solar, has to be registered with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) under G98 within 28 days of switching on. It's free. Find your DNO by postcode on the Energy Networks Association (ENA) website, and have your address, meter number (MPAN), product details and connection date ready.

Can I install plug-in solar if I rent or live in a flat?

Yes, but get permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent first. The new electrical rules don't override tenancy agreements, leases or building restrictions.
