From 27 August 2026, plug-in solar panels become legal in the UK — small, socket-connected systems that let you generate a bit of your own electricity without a full rooftop installation or planning permission. It's an appealing idea: buy a kit, plug it into a spare socket, and start offsetting your electricity bill.


But there's a catch that doesn't get much attention in the excitement: not every home's electrics are ready for it. If your house still has an old-style rewireable fuse board — the kind with brown Bakelite fuse carriers and coloured dots rather than modern switches — there are some important checks to make before you plug anything in.

That combination makes it much harder to know, with confidence, whether a particular socket is on a circuit that can safely take an extra load — or whether the wiring behind it is in good enough condition to begin with.


The official rules are direct about this: where a consumer unit doesn't use modern protective devices, isn't clearly labelled, or is of unknown condition, homeowners are advised to get it inspected and assessed by a qualified electrician before installing a plug-in solar product. It's a similar message to the one you'd already hear if you asked an electrician about your consumer unit for any other reason.

What to actually do

The good news is that none of this means you can't have plug-in solar with an older board — it just means a bit of homework comes first.


Start by identifying which socket you plan to use and which circuit it's on. Since older boards don't label things clearly, the practical way to check is to switch off fuses one at a time (with the board's main switch off, and carefully) and note which sockets and lights lose power together. This tells you what else shares that circuit, which matters because you don't want to overload a circuit that's already carrying a fridge, washing machine, or other steady loads.


Next, get a qualified, registered electrician to look at the board itself. Ask them two things specifically: whether the circuit you're planning to use is in good condition and suitable for the extra load, and whether it would be worth adding RCD protection — either for that circuit or as part of a wider consumer unit upgrade. Many electricians will suggest an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) at this point, which is a good idea anyway for a board this age, plug-in solar or not.


Also check the socket you intend to use isn't damaged, cracked, loose, or showing signs of scorching. The rules are explicit that plug-in solar shouldn't be connected to a socket that's degraded or of doubtful condition.


Finally, keep an eye on the numbers. Plug-in solar systems are capped at 800W of output, and anything approaching or above 960W requires a fuller professional assessment regardless of what kind of board you have. These systems also aren't allowed to feed power back into your home for storage in a battery — they're designed to offset what you're using in real time, not to export or store.
