Ricoh's THETA range is one of the best-known names in 360 cameras, and two models get asked about more than any other: the Ricoh Theta X and the Ricoh Theta Z1. Both are pocket-sized 360 cameras from the same manufacturer, so why are they priced differently, and which one should you actually buy? That's what this guide answers.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 was Ricoh's flagship 360 camera for several years, and it's still the model serious 360 photographers reach for. Its standout feature is a pair of large 1.0-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensors — the same sensor size you'd find in some high-end compact cameras — built into a slim, pocketable magnesium alloy body.
That sensor size is the whole story with the Z1. Bigger sensors gather more light, which means noticeably better performance in dim interiors, cloudy skies, or anywhere the dynamic range is tricky. Combine that with RAW (DNG) shooting — a first for the THETA series — and an aperture mechanism designed to reduce blown-out highlights, and the Z1 gives photographers genuine manual control over exposure and post-processing that most 360 cameras simply don't offer. It also supports 4K 360° livestreaming and records with a 4-channel microphone, capturing spatial audio from four directions at once.
Where the Z1 shows its age is everyday usability. It tops out at 4K video, its screen is a small status display rather than a touchscreen, its battery is sealed inside the body, and — in this 51GB version — storage is fixed with no way to expand it.
The Ricoh Theta X is the newer, more general-purpose alternative. Instead of chasing sensor size, Ricoh focused this model on resolution, video, and everyday convenience.
Photos can reach up to 60MP (11008 x 5504) thanks to Ricoh's high-precision image stitching — nearly triple the pixel count of the Z1. Video gets a much bigger upgrade too: 5.7K at 30fps with improved image stabilisation, well ahead of the Z1 for anyone shooting video content or virtual tours that viewers might zoom into.
The X is also simply easier to live with day-to-day. It's the first THETA to get a proper 2.25-inch touchscreen, letting you frame shots and change settings without reaching for the smartphone app. It's also the first to support a user-replaceable battery and an external memory card, so you're not stuck waiting for a charge or limited by fixed internal storage on a long shoot.
