Dead spots in the bedroom, buffering in the garden office, one bar in the kitchen — most homes have somewhere the WiFi just doesn't reach. A WiFi extender is the simplest and cheapest fix. In short: a WiFi extender picks up your router's existing wireless signal, boosts it, and rebroadcasts it — pushing coverage into the rooms your router can't reach on its own. Here's how that works, and how to decide whether an extender is the right solution for your home.
Your router broadcasts a wireless signal that weakens with distance and every wall, floor and ceiling it passes through. Brick, concrete and metal are particularly effective at soaking it up — which is why the far end of the house, the loft conversion or the garden office often ends up with a weak or unusable connection.
A WiFi extender (also called a WiFi booster or repeater) sits between your router and the dead zone. It works as a relay:
Your devices then connect to the extender instead of straining to reach the distant router. To your phone or laptop, the extender's network behaves just like normal WiFi.
The single biggest mistake people make is plugging the extender into the dead zone itself. An extender can only rebroadcast what it receives — if the signal reaching it is weak, the signal it passes on will be weak too, just louder.
The golden rule: place the extender roughly halfway between your router and the area you want to cover, somewhere it still receives a strong signal. Most modern extenders have an LED indicator that shows signal strength to help you find the sweet spot. If the light shows a poor connection, move it closer to the router.
A basic single-band extender has to do two jobs on one radio channel — talking to your router and talking to your devices — which can cut the available bandwidth roughly in half. That's fine for browsing and email, but you'll notice it when streaming in HD.
Dual-band extenders solve this by using one frequency band (usually 5GHz) to communicate with the router and the other (2.4GHz) to serve your devices, so neither connection has to share. If you plan to stream video, game or take video calls through the extender, dual-band is worth the modest extra cost.

Do WiFi extenders slow down your internet? An extender can't make your broadband faster than what enters your home, and single-band models can halve speeds through the extended network. A dual-band extender keeps the slowdown minimal — and a strong extended signal is always faster in practice than a weak direct one.
Does a WiFi extender create a second network? Traditionally yes — you'd see "YourWiFi_EXT" as a separate network. Many newer extenders support seamless roaming (using the same network name as your router), so your devices switch automatically as you move around the house.
Will an extender work with any router? Almost always. WiFi extenders use universal standards, so they work with the routers supplied by BT, Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and other UK providers. Just check the extender supports the same WiFi standard as your router (WiFi 5 or WiFi 6) to get full speeds.
How far will a WiFi extender reach? Most extenders add coverage of around 100–150 square metres in open space, though walls and floors reduce this. For distances beyond one extender's reach — like a detached garage — powerline adapters or an outdoor access point are usually the better tool.
